America's Army is actually pretty fun.

The USMC is actually the main fighting force in Fallujah, and the ones dying are mostly terrorists... but I guess knowing a little bit about the situation is too much to ask before someone goes shooting off their opinion.

The best game for linux, certainly the game of the moment is wesnoth. I noticed a few have mentioned zangband(my long term love) but it hasn't been updated for eons :(. Freeciv is certainly looking its age although I wonder if 2.0.0 would change my mind. I think the new abstact shooters are belting and I look forward to each one. As for the 3D stuff I have to say I haven't played it much.

The ones dying there are Iraqi citizens trying to defend their homes from foreign invaders, but that discussion doesn't belong in this thread.

I have become a big fan of BZFLAG. Parsec is a must have for every installation, Stratagus - my starcraft alternitive, perfect stratagy game, One MORE FOR RAPTOR!!!! in light of the opensource community I have used, with an open mind, tux-aqfh, tuxkart, cube, and others. There is just so much to choose from in gentoo, One of the only reasons I keep coming back to it.

P.S. 'Course, my favorite game in portage, (and probably the pc gaming world) is Unreal Tournament 2004!!! Cant wait to see UT2007!!!!

Keep Gentoo'ing!

Chalk up another vote for Nethack. Highest replay value of any game ever created. 10 years from now I'll probably still play it from time to time.

Parsec is hardly complete.

Stratagus is relatively complete but not a game!? Under the guise of Wargus it's a complete non-free game [in that you need the Warcraft I/II data to run it]. Any of the free Stratagus-based games are woefully incomplete. Have you actually played any of them?

freeciv is in portage, so

Code: Select all

emerge freeciv
According to the ebuild, their website is at www.freeciv.org

Late reply, I know, but I'm searching for interesting free software games too.
(I'm currently getting a lot of games after reading the past four sites, very anticipated)

Here are some I tried:
GL-117 (gl117 in portage) was mentioned before, its fun if you have a joystick. It's a shame that I really don't like flightgear, still searching for a good flight simulator ...
Supertux (supertux) wasn't mentioned? It's fun.
The Mana World (tmw) looks promising if you've ever been addicted to ragnarok online, though it's everything but ready.
Glest (glest) Looks impressive, but does not seem very completed yet.
Vegastrike (vegastrike) looks very cool, and Privateer (privateer) even more. But my joystick doesn't work with both of them.

I'm really missing a nice (rpg | action-adventure). I'm working on a project like this myself with some people (I'm not going to advertise for my own products :D), but it's not very complete yet.

What I'm mostly missing in free software games is a good story. Well, I see all this beautiful games, working just fine. But they are just not interesting. Glest for example, it looks impressive, and interesting, but it's just boring, because everything that is possible right now is a stupid duel against the computer.

<edit>
Almost forgot! This one is not bad at all, an MMORPG:
Eternal Lands (el)
</edit>

BTW: I just tried americas-army, thought it was worth a try. It has some interesting points, taking the paratroopers test really reminded me of my acrophobia. You even have to do some (boring) theoretical tests.
But otherwise, it is absolutely disgusting. The loading screen (seems to be always the same) is just too much for me :D

I'm looking forward to try parsec, it looks wonderful!

Yes it will, this is a comment from http://www.happypenguin.org :wink:

change line 52 of VCommon.h to:
typedef void (*PFNGLBUFFERDATAARBPROC)(GLenum target, GLsizeiptrARB size, const GLvoid *data, GLenum usage);
So it will work on 64 bit systems. Thanks.

Torcs is really good. The graphics are about Need for Speed 3 level of so (not great, but not bad), but the control and the physics are great and that's what really counts in a racing game. And most importantly it is a ton of fun 8)
