Crazy noob question!! about kernel (solved)

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Crazy noob question!! about kernel (solved)

Post by casper2601 » Thu Nov 18, 2004 2:57 am

Now i am really confused. I was making some adjustment via /usr/src/linux-2.6.9-gentoo-r1/make menuconfig

When i went to usrc/src i see inux-2.6.9-gentoo-r1 (as usual)...but now i am noticing inux-2.6.9-gentoo-r4 (notice the -r4!!). Where did this come from?? I am a total noob who just finished a fresh install from stage 1. Did -r4 come from me updating something? and should i be using this new -r4 rather than the -r1 ??? This must be one of the dumbest questions lol But its the only way for me to learn. If i should be using the new -r4....how would i set it up to replace the old one...could you please advise me step by step so i dont make any dumb errors!!!

Sorry for the noob question, and I really appreciate your help!

bets regards,

casper

2.6.x-rx (with r(followed by number) devs says, which is the latest patched, bugfixed, hole closed or whatever release of the program (if small but important patch comes out, in most cases devs (developers) add release number after version, eg. 2.6.9-4 (in Debian), 2.6.9-r4 (Gentoo), 2.6.6-4.5 (Suse)

from time to time, when u use 'emerge sync' or 'emerge-webrsync' the portage add new (-rx) to most of the files, some of them automaticaly goes in hell, and new comes in (in this way, why not someone make a option to emerge, which one everyone can see/check what was added after last sync, what was removed and whas updated (-rx), and dont send me to category-name/package-name/Changelog

What was the other questions ? 8)

Code: Select all

# emerge app-portage/esearch
Then use `esync` instead of `emerge sync`. =)

Strange, I'm using 0.6.2 (currently marked 'x86') and esync is right in /usr/sbin/ and is a symlink to /usr/lib/esearch/esync.py
