Okay, i've searched around the forums and can't find an answer so here goes....
I have a home network with my two roommates, just plugged in to a hub, uplinked through a cable modem. I'm the nerd, i have gentoo, they have XP. I have an ftp server up and running (lotsa ripped tv shows and whatnot) for them to download from. My one roommate gets ~5mb/s transfer -- the other 30kb/s. I think the fast transfer is going directly to my comp, the slow one is going through our IP, which i am pretty sure caps uploads at the aforementioned 30k.

Is there anyway to setup XP to go directly through the hub to my comp? i'm not too bad with the computers, but networking is not something i've ever figured out. any help would be appreciated. thanks a lot

simply remove from the clients with XPSP2 - the microsoft smart firewall, and everything will be fine

well, the firewall is turned off.
that is if you mean the one i get to when i right click on his connection and choose the advanced tab where the microsoft firewall is.

still getting the slow speed.

btw is there a diff address than the one over the net used for home use. i.e. my global is 24.124.50.**, but is there a home one like 168.*.*.* or something? thanks

In those WinXP machines you could try the following in command prompt

route add aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd netmask 255.255.255.255 eee.fff.ggg.hhh metric 1 IF 1

Where aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is the ip of your linux box and eee.fff.ggg.hhh is the ip of the XP. The "IF" is the identifier for network card. You can view routes with

If you want to make the route survive boot use -p option.

If I understand you correctly you just plugged a hub directly into your cable modem. That's probably a bad idea as it means your ISP now has to give you a seperate IP for each machine on your network. Are you sure you don't have a router or firewall device between the hub and the cable modem? Or maybe the cable modem or hub is itself acting as a router?

When you traceroute from WinXP to Linux what does it say?(tracert on Win)
Are both the Linux box and the WinXP box on the same IP subnet?(What are their IP's and subnet masks?)
Is there any kind of VPN or PPOE software running on the WinXP box?

i'm heading home this afternoon and will perform as much as i can. also, i don't know if it's acting as a router, but we do have our hub plugged directly into the cable modem. thanks for the help so far.

should we be on different masks?

btw, the slow windows box is a fresh install, just drivers so far (and firefox

) also, probably any other spyware that's already gotten onto it. thanks for the help again

You could buy a cheap linksys or d-link router, i guess it cost now about 55â¬ or something...

Or you could put in an extra network card in your pc and connect the internet with your eth0 and the hub with eth1 and setup iptables, so you're then the router.

I would go for a Linksys or a D-Link as well. It's the fast and easy solution. If you wanna have some fun and have some time then you can roll your own Linux firewall

If you live in the USA just go down to your local Sprawlfaart, Worstbuy or Circuit Shitty and pick one up on the cheap. Your profile didn't mention what country you live in so I'm guessing.

This little box is extremely popular and you can hack it to run Linux if you want.
