ISO Test kernels, round two

  • Quote

Post by Gerk » Sat Jan 04, 2003 6:31 pm

Hello Everyone

In anticipation for the 1.4 release, and the fact that some users had some issues booting the current experimental ISO kernel, I have 2 more kernels in rotation for testing on ppckernel.org.

Anyone that can try one or both of these kernels and report your results here would be great. The kernels are located here:

http://www.ppckernel.org/kernel.php?id=28
http://www.ppckernel.org/kernel.php?id=29

If possible please test these, just worried about
a) booting
b) working console video of some sort (X may be off a bit but no worries)
c) working ethernet/airport

These kernels are aimed at installation only, so other things may or may not work as expected (i.e. there is no sound support on these kernels).

For any reports, please give us the following information:
a) which kernel (bk or benh)
b) your machine hardware specs
c) for failures (if possible) a dmesg from working kernel and maybe the output of cat /proc/pci

Thanks to everyone in advance.

I have a B&W G3 that did not boot with the 1.4 iso...
With bk all works ok (even X)

Hi,

i have an ibook 600 with Radeon M6

I had problems using the 1.2-iso (seg-faults during bootstrap, do you remember Gerk?). Now i used 1.4_rc1-iso and everything works fine.

I tested both kernels,
the bk works only if i append video=ofonly,
but both kernels detect my ethernet and my airport-card.
Ethernet works and I can't really test the airport-card (no Access Point atm) but it's detected and ifconfig works

X works, to use it with bk i had to comment my "Option usefbdev" line in XF86Config out.

Thanks for Gentoo, Lothi

here is my output from "cat /proc/pci:

Ok, perhaps it's a littlebit to late. I just tested both kernel on my PowerBook G4 867Mhz and they both work fine. There's only one small thing with the bk-kernel: when I close the lid the laptop goes to sleep mode as it should. But the apple on the back of the lid is still illuminated.

ahh ok, no worries about the sleep mode and such with these just that console + networking is all ok for installation :)

Thanks for testing, any other takers? :)

Hello!

Summary: ben1 works on the iLamp and supports ethernet, console video, X11

Tested:

Linux version 2.4.20-ben1 (root@dual) (gcc version 2.95.4 20010319 (prerelease/franzo/20010406)) #1 SMP Mon Jan 6 17:53:58 EST 2003

.. on a new (Sept. 2002) iMac G4 w/Flat Panel display ( iLamp ). This is the 15" iMac G4 with the ComboDrive. 512MB RAM present. nVidia GeForce2-MX 32MB video.

Running Debian here (3.0 I think; writing this part of my report under MacOS X 10.2.1 so I can't check -- glibc is newer, to support a later version of MOL, which runs fine under my 2.4.19-4a kernel, which began its life as YDL 2.3-distributed kernel source).

Your ISO bk kernel doesn't work on the iLamp, but your ben1 does (and supports X11).

Under your ben1 kernel, ethernet works; I had to ssh into the iLamp to reset the keyboard map to then login on the console. My X11 keymap was also broken with your ben1 kernel; I changed the necessary parameter in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and all was fine (for the limited testing I did under X11).

These keymap problems are not unique -- I believe they are similar to those encountered with the Dayton kernel d/l from YDL 2.3 binary distrib. (which is how I happened to have the solution handy, having solved it once before).

Your ben1 kernel boots normally, and the Tux graphic appears in the correct fashion.

bk boots far enough to see the Linux kernel version -- about a dozen lines are reported, and then the console video goes blank; seems likely the system never came up fully, since I could not ssh into the machine, after waiting a short while.

Tests included in this report:

$ cat /proc/pci
$ lspci
$ dmesg
$ cat /proc/bus/pci/devices
$ cat /proc/bus/i2c
$ cat /proc/bus/ieee1394/devices
$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
$ cat /proc/tty/drivers
$ cat /proc/fb
$ cat /proc/apm
$ cat /proc/interrupts

Here's a log of my tests while ben1 was running:

[ ethernet address obscured to read ..abcdef instead of the
real address; real address was reported in the original. ]
