vmware: wont boot from bootable CD

  • Quote

Post by nitemare2u » Mon Nov 01, 2004 3:57 am

OK heres the problem:

-I put the CD in (Gentoo LiveCD Universal 2004.2) - it IS bootable.
-start vmware ( modules already loaded)
-start my virtual machine
-wait a minute: then it says:

Code: Select all

No bootable CD, floppy, or hard disk was detected. To install an operating system, insert a bootable CD or floppy and restart the virtual machine by clicking the Reset button.
I'm trying to use /dev/hdd because /mnt/cdrom doesnt work - it says its not a cd device - so i go to the source its mounted from (dev/hdd) - and now i need a bootable CD - even tho i have one IN THE CD-DRIVE - and i dont know what to do now.

Also I have used an ISO file - the Gentoo Minimal 2004.2 one. That didnt work either..

How do i fix this?

I am having the exact same problem, and have tried all of the above stuff, all of which did not work. Anyone have any ideas?

I can't confirm this.
I'm trying to install W2k Server since some hours, but vmware doesn't recognise the medium within the cdrom drive.
Booting from an ISO image doesn't work either.
Running 4.5.2 build 8848, revision 2

I'm having the same problem, I can't get it to boot from the cdrom. I manually entered /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 (which exists on my system) and it still gives me the message that it can't boot.

I'm using vmware 4.5.2 build 4488 (r2) and the 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 kernel.

I got a warning after running it the first time telling me that my kernel was newer than vmware expected and it may not run correctly, so I'm assuming this is why it doesn't work?

Should a bug report be supported to the devs perhaps?

Updated vmware-workstation from r2 to r5, and still can't recognise bootable CD or iso image on the HDD.

Had the same problem and solved it by going into the BIOS setup (hit F2 on VM startup), going to the Boot section and moving the CD-ROM choice to the top of the list, then Exit & Save Settings.

I got a winXP64 iso that boots, but vmware doesnt see my amd64 3200 as 64bit processor so it doesnt install it.
with win2k and winME id didnt work not for the cd nor for the isos I created.

VMware Workstation 5.0 on amd64~
2.6.11 gentoo-dev kernel
plextor cd/RW and some noname quad speed rom

Code: Select all

PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
Operating System not found

Gentleman [and ladies too]

I don't know what happened, but i uninstalled vmware-workstation and installed vmware-player. Played with for some time and then uninstalled the player, re-installed workstation and it worked!!

However, I did not understand what happened here... :?
