WTH is this? Current profile is deprecated....

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Is it "safe" to link to a newer version??? I'm pretty good at running into trouble so I want to ask first.

Aparently not... at least it didn't work for me. Now I keep getting this when syncing:
>>> SERVER OUT OF DATE: rsync://x.x.x.x/gentoo-portage
(with an actual IP of course)

After some frustration, I got it working again by linking to 2004.2 (2004.0 and 2004.3 did not work).

hmmm, guess I asked for that one... my local copy was more up to date than the rsync server I kept getting in the rsync rotation aparently. Fixed itself with a matter time.

I made a new partition and plan to back up first. See how it goes. At least I have a 'fall back' this time.

Me getting smarter. 8O

I am getting the same. Another strange thing is, that after having linked to that new version

Code: Select all

emerge -p depclean
wanted to unmerge dhcpcd. Why?

[edit]Sorry for my ignorance, maybe I should have read http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-upgrading.xml
FIRST. Sorry![/edit]

I don't understand that whole thing...

I think I've ran into another problem after symlinking make.profile. My user can no longer write to /opt/foldingathome dir. It will run the app, but it won't allow my user to save the config files... It was working prior to this.

Hi,

at least in the default-linux/x86/2004.3 profile sys-apps/slocate and net-misc/dhcpcd no longer belong to the packages of the system profile. So emerge --depclean will remove them when they aren't listed in the worldfile.

Poly
The manual said "Requires Windows10 or better" so I installed GNU/Linux...

Need a stage1 tarball? (Unofficial builds)

And why is that so? I would think dhcpcd should belong to the system profile.

ummm, the method in the handbook is not working for me. When i try to rm /etc/make.profile, it says

Code: Select all

rm: cannot remove `/etc/make.profile/': Not a directory
But going along with the symlink anyway still works of course, and i've tried linking to 2004.0 through 2004.3... Still gives me the deprecated message. Any help?

Hi,
I had the same problem. Try removing the trailing "/".
"rm /etc/make.profile", not "rm /etc/make.profile/"

Hope that helps.
Cheers,

When you try to remove it, do not have the trailing / after the "make.profile" otherwise rm will not think you're removing the sym link, it will think you're trying to remove the whole directory.

If any use flags have changed with your profile you will want to add the "--newuse" option to your emerge world after you update the profile.

Why should non-dhcp users be forced to install it?

amen

i ended up putting it in package.mask cause portage wanted to install the darn thing with every update.

now i only need to find a way to get rid of module-init-tools ...
it's sort of annoying to be forced to install that if your running a monolithic kernel.

Hey thanks for that one :-)
Now I can finally get rid of those silly error messages regarding missing modules.

OK. Followed instructions on the profile upgrade handbook.

Code: Select all

ls -l make.profile
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root 48 Nov  5 00:58 make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2004.2
Took a bold step to switch directly to 2004.2 profile instead of emerge suggested 2004.0. Hope this is OK.
Now one of the suggestions in the forum was to do
emerge -p --deep --update world
and the result is this

Code: Select all

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] sys-apps/modutils (from pkg sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.0-r2)
[blocks B ] x11-themes/gtk-engines-thinice (from pkg x11-themes/gnome-themes-2.6.2)
[blocks B     ] <=app-crypt/gpgme-0.3.14 (from pkg app-crypt/gpgme-0.9.0-r1)
[blocks B ] gnome-extra/acme (from pkg gnome-base/control-center-2.6.1)
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/shadow-4.0.5-r2 [4.0.4.1-r4]
[ebuild U ] media-libs/netpbm-10.20 [9.12-r4]
among other things. I am not quite sure how to resolve the blocked packages. I am trying to read up on it. Any help would be appreciated.

my emerge -p --deep --update system gives

Code: Select all

Calculating system dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] sys-apps/modutils (from pkg sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.0-r2)
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/shadow-4.0.5-r2 [4.0.4.1-r4]
[ebuild U ] app-arch/ncompress-4.2.4-r1 [4.2.4]
[ebuild U ] sys-libs/slang-1.4.9-r1 [1.4.9]
Now i am getting concerned. What else do i do.
Does an emerge sync might fix things?
Thanks for your help.

That modutils is for 2.4 kernels. If you are using a 2.6 kernel you need to emerge module-init-tools. I think when you emerge the right one it will remove the block. I seem to recall emerge linux26-headers helped with that as well, at least it is installed on mine anyway.

From another install, on a friends, I recall that you should not try to install both at the same time or have the wrong one. Unmerge the one you don't need, then emerge the one you do. If they are both on there, you get these really nasty errors during boot up.

Hope that helps a bit.

:D :D :D :D
Oh, still to chicken to start the change and have not made my back-up yet. I'm trying to show my mom how to use a puter. She is ~70 and didn't even know how to move the mouse pointer. Try explaining that one.

hmmmm. Nothing new but I'm confused here. I haven't done anything except to change the make.profile link change, and my back-ups. This is what it says though.

Code: Select all

root@smoker / # emerge -p gcc

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] sys-devel/gcc-3.3.4-r1

root@smoker / # gcc-config --get-current-profile
i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.4
root@smoker / #
Parden me but it looks like it IS updated. I didn't do that yet though, right??

If it is up to date, do I just start compiling?

I knew this would happen. :? :?

Thanks

Hey, fellas. I got this message this morning. I switched the sym link to 2004.3 and added dhcpcd and slocate (WTF?!) to the world file as they indeed showed up in a pretend depclean.

Now my question is this: am I really supposed to rebuild the system? I would really rather not.

Also, fbset showed up in depclean as well. I am using Xorg 6.8. Is it one of those things I should add to world manually, or is it useless (I know I use fbsetbg, but that could be something different for all I know)?

Thanks in advance.
