installed 3.3.1 amd64.. compiled the enture suite without aRts.
System notifications will NOT work with external player with /usr/bin/aplay entered in the box.
aplay will play the sounds fine at the command prompt, and all sounds work in games, etc..
just nothing with system notifications.
KDE system notifications gone. Not Solved!

Same problem here (yet my system can't find 'aplay'). I have RC96 audio integrated into an IC7-MAX3 motherboard.
I compiled with alsa (didn't use -alsa).
3.3.X.
It was working before I disabled the sound system and re-enabled it. (If I press the sound test button, it works just fine, but testing the open/close window sounds and such are broken)
Testing MIDI fails but testing sound works. Also, I am using the latest 2.6 kernel.
