well, that's what I get when I tried to boot my gentoo :(

I remembered that the instuctions never told me to set a boot partition as active when I partitioned so I went back through the liveCD and set the boot partition as active, no luck.

running GRUB, and at a loss....

thought I followed to the letter, looks like the letter I missed was the most important!

PS: compiled the kernel, configured GRUB anything else obvious?

TIA.

crap, I think you got it.... I noticed these

Code: Select all

# grub
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit
commands in the ref guide (I was using the million-page comprehensive manual, boy I sure hope it now has the gnome/kde install manual included too!) and I thought to myself hmm I don't remember doing that....

what will I all have to do?
liveCD in -> mount boot -> ?chroot?

thanks

boot up the live cd and chroot with boot partition mounted to /mnt/gentoo/boot

then run grub and do whats needed,
and reboot.

as far as gnome/kde is concerned you'll also need to compile xorg or xfree which will take quite a bit, but emerging gnome or kde will take care of that.

I also have this issue I've done

Code: Select all

# grub
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit
also done grub-install

Also made sure the boot partition was toggled * bootable in fdisk.

I've even installed lilo and get the same message

also I've removed the /dev/hda1 partition added it back and reformatted it again in ext2 format. To no avail I still get
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

I have gentoo on three other machines and never ran into this issue.

Thanks in adavance

This may seem kinda obvious, but is your BIOS set to boot from that disk?

This may seem a bit simply put...but are you sure your Channels are working properly. I'll assume your use IDE. Check your cable first.....how do you have it set up? I mean, do you have IDE0 going to HD and IDE1 going to CDROM or what? Usually if you get a message like that and aren't using Windows....it could be a hardware issue...something as simple as a bad IDE cable.
I've never seen a purple cow...
I never hope to see one...
but I can tell you this...
I'd rather see one than be one.

what my problem ended up being is that the gentoo HD is HDD-0 since my other two drives are a an IDE RAID0 they don't count as HDD to BIOS or grub!

sorry if that doesn't help.

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.
If you actually installed grub in MBR and only have one HD, then this message means that you have misconfigured boot devices order in BIOS or - more probably - that the computer cannot find the drive because of hardware error (faulty drive, cable, IDE controller...).
