Oracle certification for Gentoo

  • Quote

Post by joehack » Wed Oct 27, 2004 1:10 pm

This idea came across last night...
Has someone ever thought about making Gentoo Linux a certified platform for Oracle (SAP, DB/2 etc.). This could be real big push for Gentoo. I think it would be achievable, since Gentoo Inc. is now a registered non profit organization. What do you think?

Well, you better think this one through.

Corporati only care about one factor in their IT:
"how expensive/impossible is it to replace/rebuild everything I have when the excrement hits the megawatt generator ?"
That includes people, by the way.

Since there is no standards-based Gentoo install, verifying this certification will be nigh-on impossible.

You have to be able to guarantee a drop-in replacement for both people and the OS - something you simply can't do with Gentoo.

An Oracle cert for Linux, now - that should be possible.
I guarantee you they'll go for Red Hat, though.

I think Oracle already supports Red Hat.

I believe Oracle supports Red Hat and SuSE. That doesn't mean you can't get it running on other platforms, though, you'll just be on your own.

Gentoo needs to create a more static tree first. Something like GLEP 19 or the myriad other proposals along the same lines. Given that the idea's been kicking around for at least two and a half years now I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you but hey, never say never I guess...

One massive factor is support - a big company (which they will be if they're using Oracle) wants to know that - to quote a famous author - when the sewage farm hits the ten megawatt aerogenerator (sounds a bit like adaptr's post doesn't it :D) there's someone they can ring up at 3am and abuse. This is what you're paying for when you get RHEL - Red Hat are standing by to clean up the mess.

Gentoo simply doesn't play in that league. That's not what it's about.

Providing 24/7 support could be a niche for a commercial service provider with good connections to the community. These companies should in return contribute to the development of the platform.
Gentoo might still only be used by users who understand the technical advantage of it. But offers a lot of potential to optimize a companies IT infrastructure.
I am still convinced that the Gentoo architecture is enterprise compatibe. Project like GLEP19 might be the first step into this direction.

Thought it might have been :-)

Haven't read it yet, no - it's getting to that time of year where someone may want an idea for a Christmas present, and trouble ensues if I've already read it. Women...

I hear you - though I don't have a SO who cares ATM ;-)
Thing is, the hardbacks have steadily been increasing in price here these last few Euro-years, and I'll be lucky to get it below €30 anywhere...

I don't need to tell you it sux0rs.

IMHO gentoo will never hit the corporate environment until it begins releasing binary packages for the most used applications out there. Let's face it, no sysadmin has neither the time nor the will to lose 30 min re-compiling gcc or X whenever they want to do an update. Like i've said time and time again, gentoo is THE distro for single desktops but from a corporate point of view it's probably the least wanted.

my 2 cents.

Thats sounds a little harsh ;) but, i got your point. You'll be without Oracle support, but, I bet gentoo forum can more than make it up.

Well... Yeah, I guess. I mean, the guys on the forums will probably help you with every question, but corporations need their answers yesterday and depending on a forums is pretty much borderline crazy for them. I mean, theres no gurantee the forums will even be up...

True... but there's a lot to be saved with standard clients, you can build one tbz2 and distribute it to all of them. But yeah, it's a bit silly - Portage makes installing/deinstalling applications so easy, but what it's actually doing is not what most home/corporate users want.

No, you don't! €30 is ridiculous.... hardbacks are normally $40-50ish here which is €20-25, and that's bad enough.
At least they get here in reasonable time - some of the bookstores have taken to waiting six months before even getting the hardback out here

Well .. corporati don't only need answers, they need "enterprise" OS with colored labels, printed manual, a support number where they can bitch and so on. It's not only an answer yesterday my friend. I can even say, a distro from a non profit organization will not make it to offices.

Gentoo is not an enterprise linux.

More than not only an answer yesterday- deploy an ERP app and let it fail multiple times in short order- let the DB become corrupted once or twice a weak. Now try to trace the source of the error- you know its the ERP vendor's shitty programming but they blame it on OS issues. Meanwhile you paid 1million bucks for it and you are ready to sue and are talking to the insurance company who bonded these idiots. I've seen it first hand- seen vendors bring in their head developers and have them lie about error codes etc- I can only imagine the shit they would have been able to pull if the OS was non-standard.

I could see a company with an existing linux infrastructure moving to gentoo- for file/print servers webservers etc- if u have in-house talent and since there isnt anything in gentoo you couldn't do in another UNIX flavor why not- if gentoo does a xfree86 just move to another distro down the line. But then you'd hear shit everytime you suggested any movement of anything ever again.
Which is why I'd suggest GUSE or HedRat - pass the blame baby and keep your job!
