Changing processor from Celeron 700 to AMD64?

  • Quote

Post by Tashtego » Tue Oct 26, 2004 7:26 am

I'm thinking of upgrading my processor, and changing from a Celeron 700 (which is already running Gentoo) to the AMD64. If I change the processor, what modifications will I need to make to my Gentoo x86 system to get it AMD64 compatible? (e.g. recompile kernel, update certain flags)....

Or would it be better just to re-install Gentoo with an AMD64 build and reformat the hard drive?

I went the clean compile route and am so far liking it. However, something relevant that you might find promising: I swapped a p3 500 mobo and proc with an AXP 2500+ mobo and proc and it worked just fine. However, I think AMD64 is too fundamental a change to just upgrade packages as the libc and toolchain has to be upgraded to 64 bits.

Would it be possbile to just swap the processor over, get online and upgrade the entire system/recompile for the new architecture?

Theoretically, yes. Change your ACCEPT_KEYWORD and maybe some USE flags, then run:

Code: Select all

emerge world -uepv
Of course, a backup is highly suggested before doing this. :)

This is outright impossible. These are completely different architectures! If you want an AMD64 procccy you need an AMD64-board.If possible for a 939 socket,as the 940 and 754 are going to be ditched soon.On the other hand it might make these "older" boards more attractive pricewise.

I think it was assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that a new motherboard would be purchased along with the new AMD64 CPU. Obviously you can't put an AMD64 CPU in a board that support a Celeron 700. Your going to need new RAM maybe too.

Probably a new Power supply as well, as far as the arch, amd64 runs quite nicely in x86 and about the only thing you would need to change going that route is your kernel hardware support & modules.

Yeah, I meant a new motherboard + processor chip! Still haven't decided whether to go with AMD64 or P4 just yet - I'm still doing my research!
