Prism based wireless cards in the UK?

  • Quote

Post by george » Wed Oct 13, 2004 9:04 am

I'm attempting to go wireless and, after reading up on it, for various reasons, a prism54 chipset sounds like what I need.

I've spent what seems like days going round the forums, google and any number of distributors' and manufacturers' web sites but I can't find anywhere that tells me what chipsets are being used (apart from allnet.de which I found in another topic but I'd prefer to buy in the UK)

Does anyone know of any current cards (pci and cardbus) based on the prism chipset available in the UK, or failing that any UK distributors who are capable of understanding the question and responding sensibly

From everything I've read it sounds like model numbers are not a reliable guide as the manufacturers seem to change chipsets as they feel like it without telling anyone.

Thanks in anticipation.

Well I can direct you to two addresses where you can find the SMC 2835W (it's a prism54 based card) This one has a cardbus interface as I use it on my laptop.

Thanks SPW.

More hunting today and I've seen some reasonably priced a/b/g access points. I've decided to go for the 3-Com one because it's in stock and the D-Link isn't available yet. Also I like the look of the retractable antenna on the pccard and, with no particular reason not to, I feel safer having both from the same manufacturer (even though it shouldn't matter).

I know I'm going Atheros not Prism but I seem to have no choice with a/b/g.

When I bought my equipment I also went for an SMC router/access point and an SMC cardbus. But this should not matter at all. a/b/g access points are quite convenient I guess, but at the time I bought mine, the b/g were quite new and there were no a/b/g ones. Well, good luck configuring everything. Things are much simpler now as they were a year ago, so I hope you won't have any serious problems.
