I don't have a /etc/portage directory. I created one and put in all the masked packages but it didn't change anything. Is my portage not installed correctly? I'm using the latest stable version.

I am not sure what you mean by your above post when you say 'I put all the masked packages in [there]..'

what u need to do is this
create the /etc/portage directory if not created

Code: Select all

mkdir -p /etc/portage
then we need to unmask the packages in portage already
Open up the file

Code: Select all

nano -w /etc/portage/package.unmask
And we need to add these lines

Code: Select all

# xfce 4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfce4-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfce4-base-4.1.90
=xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.1.90
=xfce-base/libxfcegui4-4.1.90
=xfce-base/libxfce4mcs-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfce-mcs-plugins-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfce4-panel-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfwm4-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfce-utils-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfdesktop-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfce4-session-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xfprint-4.1.90
=xfce-extra/xfce4-iconbox-4.1.90
=xfce-extra/xfce4-systray-4.1.90
=xfce-extra/xfce4-toys-4.1.90
=xfce-extra/xfce4-trigger-launcher-4.1.90
=xfce-extra/xfwm4-themes-4.1.90
=xfce-extra/xfcalendar-4.1.90
=xfce-extra/xfce4-appfinder-4.1.90
=xfce-extra/xfce4-icon-theme-4.1.90
=xfce-base/xffm-4.1.90
Now we re-emerge xfce4 and we should see a whole new big list of upgrades.

Code: Select all

emerge -av xfce4-base
Hopefully that should all work.

Sorry for the wording. I put all of those in the /etc/portage/package.unmask file and it didn't work. Thats my problem. Do I need some option in my /etc/make.conf

ok well if thats the case then u need to

comment out the lines from

Code: Select all

/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask
concerning those packages listed above.
If that still doesnt work, then maybe you need to add to your

Code: Select all

/etc/portage/package.keywords

Code: Select all

I can't make it work.

after I've edited the package.unmask, I get this:

Code: Select all

gentooNorm portage # emerge -pv xfce4

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

I installed it, and it worked quite well, but suddenly, xfwm died, and took down the entire xfce installation too. I couldn't even unmerge 4.2.0-beta1 and go back to 4.0.6, as it would just run in a loop trying to start up.

I got it "fixed" by removing everything xfce-related, installing 4.0.6 and unmerging xfce-session. It works now, I guess.

Well, that's what I get for trying to run beta software, I guess...

It is not a good idea to have 4.0.6 and 4.2beta installed at the _same_ time.

Remove 4.0.6 first and then install 4.2beta.
I did and do not have any issues to mess around with.

Damnit I compiled 4.2 half way when I read this!

How do I remove 4.0.6? Emerge -C doesn't work!

Code: Select all

emerge -Ca $(qpkg -I xfce4)
should do the trick. Don´t know why you have problems with emerge -C.
Do you get an error message?

Oh whoops it turned out it's already unmerged. :?

That was pretty fast! I didn't get to see any things flashing by my screen when I unmerged though. Oh well.

Got it working now. Appearantly, there were some fucked up settings in .config/xfce4 that I hadn't noticed...

EDIT: and <ctrl>-<alt>-<+|-> kills X and generally hoses the system until I reboot.

Hello :D

Just saw this post, looks great however i'm having a problem emerging the ebuild. And was wondering if someone could help me with this issue, I was browsing through the post and didn't see this type of issue posted, would really like to get XFCE4 with some sweet eyecandy.

I set my PORTDIR_OVERLAY to = /usr/local/portage

Code: Select all

PORTDIR_OVERLAY=/usr/local/portage
I ran

Code: Select all

tar xvf xfce4-4.2.0_beta1-20041003.tar -C /usr/local/portage/
here is what my /etc/portage/package.keywords

Code: Select all

=x11-base/xorg-x11 x86
=x11-misc/xcompmgr ~x86
=x11-misc/transset ~x86

=xfce-extra/xfce4-toys-4.2.0_beta1 ~x86
=xfce-base/xfce4-4.2.0_beta1 ~x86
Here is what my /etc/portage/package.unmask looks like:

Code: Select all

dev-libs/dbh-1.0.20
xfce-extra/xfwm4-themes-4.2.0_beta1
xfce-base/xfce-mcs-plugins-4.2.0_beta1

xfce-extra/xfce4-mixer-4.2.0_beta1
xfce-extra/xfce4-toys-4.2.0_beta1
xfce-base/xfce4-4.2.0_beta1
Yet, when I try to
emerge =xfce4-base
I get this error:

Code: Select all

I did have xfce4 installed however I did remove all the packages
the output of:

Code: Select all

qpkg -I -v | grep xfce
and that shows that all the xfce packages have been removed.

If anyone can shead some light on this dark situation for me, I would greatly apprecaite it.

Thank you for your time.

In package.unmask, start all lines with an =. As for qpkg - maybe it got confused because portage won't load correctly with an invalid package.unmask. See if it works after correcting it.

(Oh, and 4.1.90, the packages in /usr/portage, is the 4.2.0 beta. You'll probably want to unmask that instead, instead of using an overlay directory.)

TrueDFX Thanks for your quick reply I appreciate that,

I have tried adding = in the package.unmask infornt of the packages...and are you telling me that the 4.1.90 is in /usr/portage dir is hte same as 4.2.0 beat? So I really don't need to download the tar that is on the first page of this forum? I can just emerge the 4.1.90 ebuilds already located in /usr/portage?

when I added = infornt of the packages and tried
emerge xfce4-base
I get this error:

Code: Select all

!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy "=xfce-base/libxfce4mcs-4.2.0_beta1" have been masked.

Right. This thread was created before those ebuilds made it into the portage tree.

You didn't add libxfce4mcs to your package.keywords.

Yeah. I've updated my original post now to say about the official ones too so people don't have to read more of the thread before realising.

Hello,

I have added
=xfce-base/libxfce4mcs-4.1.90 ~x86

to package.keywords

and added
=xfce-base/libxfce4mcs-4.1.90

to package.unmask

however It still gives me this error when I try
emerge xfce4-base-4.1.90.ebuild

!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy "=xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.1.90" have been masked.
!!! possible candidates are:
- xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.1.90 (masked by: ~keyword)
!!! (dependency required by "xfce-base/xfce-mcs-manager-4.1.90" [ebuild])

!!! Error calculating dependencies. Please correct.

once again here is my /etc/portage/package.keywords

Code: Select all

=dev-libs/dbh-1.0.20 ~x86

Don't do that; it's always better to use emerge --oneshot =xfce4-base-4.1.90, which would try to do the exact same thing, except it's supposed to have fewer bugs.

emerge complains about xfce-base/libxfce4util-4.1.90, but that is in your package.keywords, so aside from your use of emerge I have no other suggestions right now...

This is the first time using Gentoo (have been for about 5mo now) that I have ever encountered a ebuid as stubborn as this one to install
I removed everything from /etc/portage/package.keywords as well as /etc/portaage/package.unmask

I typed emerge --oneshot =xfce4-base-4.1.90.ebuild and this is the error I get

Calculating dependencies \!!! aux_get(): ebuild for 'xfce-base/=xfce4-base-4.1.90' does not exist at:
!!! /usr/portage/xfce-base/=xfce4-base/=xfce4-base-4.1.90.ebuild
emerge: create(): aux_get() error on xfce-base/=xfce4-base-4.1.90; aborting...

same error if I remove --oneshot :(

I would apprecaite any suggestions on how to resolve this issue.

Thank you.

That's making it try to look for an actual .ebuild file to install from when it should be searching as normal for a package. So that should be "emerge --oneshot =xfce4-base-4.1.90".

Hello again,

It seems now I get this error when I try that:

Code: Select all

emerge --oneshot =xfce4-base-4.1.90
Calculating dependencies -
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "=xfce-extra/xfce4-iconbox-4.1.90" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- xfce-extra/xfce4-iconbox-4.1.90 (masked by: package.mask, ~x86 keyword)
# Brad Cowan <bcowan@gentoo.org> (04 Oct 2004)
# masking until out of beta

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
section 2.2 "Software Availability" in the Gentoo Handbook.
!!! (dependency required by "xfce-base/xfce4-base-4.1.90" [ebuild])
I had to add =xfce-base/xfce4-base-4.1.90 ~x86 to packages.keywords and added =xfce-base/xfce4-base-4.1.90 to package.unmask
yet I still get the errors :(

Yeah, that's the idea of masking packages :)
- xfce-extra/xfce4-iconbox-4.1.90 (masked by: package.mask, ~x86 keyword)
Then that is what you have to add to package.keywords/.mask.
