Hang on LiveCD boot

Post by patrickbores » Sun Sep 26, 2004 9:47 pm

Hello,

I'm trying to install Gentoo on an old G3 iMac with 32MB of physical RAM (tight, I know.)

2004.1 wouldn't boot the CD. I received the error message: "RAMDISK: ran out of compressed data". I figured this was because the RAMDISK was too large to load into RAM.

So, I tried with an older version, 1.4. This time, the RAMDISK loads, the rootfs is mounted, but it hangs on, "Using /lib/modules/misc/cloop.o" The keyboard still responds, but nothing happens beyond this point.

Any ideas as to why this is happening, or perhaps another method of squeaking an installation through?

Patrick
P.S. - this is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

about the first error you are correct, it is the fact that you don't have enough ram.
The second error is the same, the cloop module is loaded in memory but doesn't completely get there.

In fact i would suggest having 64 MB ram minimum (that xill be actually very thight :-) )for installing Gentoo, without the option to compile your own packages.
If you wish to compile your own packages i suggest you have about 300 MB ram
