LCD tips?

  • Quote

Post by epall » Sun Sep 26, 2004 11:58 pm

I just got a brand new Samsung 712N LCD monitor and I'm wondering if anybody has tips on how to make the quality on this baby better. I'm pumping it through an analog connection, so I'm seeing a little noise. The color seems really ugly compared to my CRT, what's up with that? Is there some app I can use to tune it? Any other tips?

Do you have an nvidia card? If you do try turning up the digital vibrance.

Oddly enough, I've got the reverse situation; my LCD looks gorgeous but my CRT's are ugly as by comparison. Digital vibrance helps somewhat.

Run some basic colour calibration tests - you can find the images on the web, or make them yourself.
Gamma's easy, you just need a series of gray blocks shading from black to white; you should be able to see a difference between the darkest gray and black, and the lightest gray and white. If they look the same, your gamma is too high/low.
As far as colours go, a higher colour temperature generally produces a "cooler" looking display - ie. more blue. 9300K is good; it produces a very clean white compared to 6500K, which is quite yellow.

Google around for stuff; there's quite a bit out there, and they'll certainly explain it better than me.

Hey, that's interesting. But, how do you change the colour temperature of your LCD monitor? As I have a laptop, the monitor has no special controls, so I cannot change its colour temperature. Is there a way to change it with X?
I haven't found anything about that in google...

I just got the exact same one. I like it a lot.
I heard that I shouldn't leave it on all the time, that I should have it turn off (with power save stuff).
Is this true? I thought that was only for old CRT monitors... I can understand how it can't be great for a monitor, but, is it a huge deal?
