could someone on xorg-x11 6.7 or xfree time the time it takes them to load kde please?

Maybe include if your on reiser4 or not aswell.

It takes me 10 seconds on xorg 6.8, downgrading didn't help, I'm on reiser4, and I dont know what's wrong here, but it didn't use to be remotly close to this.

is xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1 more stable?
my xorg-x11-6.8.0 has crashed for a few times. (maybe it's xcompmgr's fault)
I'm sorry for my bad English.

no, it only contains security fixes.
The problem is with the ati-drivers, not with xorg (correct me if I'm wrong :D)

Does anyone else have this problem?
I had this problem :D
It´s a problem of xcompmgr - and it`s been fixed. It`s not in portage though. So you either have to apply this patch or use xcompmgr from cvs (see instructions here) or a modified version - it`s up to you (ain`t it all about choice  ). I haven`t actually tried the cvs version, but they merged some patches (and I`m quite sure it included the above patch or at least the fading part) Note though that the patch also add new options to xcompmgr (try e.g. -Ff for advanced fading effect or -Cc for client side shadows excluding docks) - the modified version linked to includes the patch and adds even more options to tweak shadow appearance (it`s even possible to set its color... will there be a user besides the author really using this?)
Try what appeals most to you and have fun (BTW - it`s all in the forum...)

xcompmgr locks up xorg when running a glx app. i've spent some time trying to figure this out, and i can successfully run glxgears and ut2004 if i run xorg as my username, xcompmgr as root, and the app as root. this makes me wonder. I'm using udev and by default it doesn't give my username permissions to /dev/nvidia* but as soon as i run xcompmgr as myself or a gl app (with /dev/nvidia* perms changed) as myself or any other combination, i get the lock up.

any ideas?

I`m pretty sure you haven`t looked very close 'cause it`s there  :

Code: Select all

cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@freedesktop.org:/cvs/xapps co xcompmgr
pushd xcompmgr
./autogen.sh --prefix=/opt/fdo
make
sudo make install
popd
You should nevertheless change the prefix-option or leave it out - the instructions refer to Keith Packard`s XServer (we don`t care :) ) In respect to transset I don`t know the location of that repository, Google is your friend!
Oh, and should you wonder about pushd and popd (I did) - you can use cd if you prefer.
After having checked out the code (that`s what the cvs command does), you should check the version of autoconf & friends as mentioned in the linked page (See: Before You Build)
Try it out, it`s small and not that complicated :P

I have two ATI Radeon Cards (an AGP AIW and a PCI 7000 [both R100]) and I get a wierd lock-up when I try to start Xorg 6.8.0. I can use either screen individually, but if I try to start up with both, I just get the black background, and the "X" cursor, and the cursor won't move to the second monitor (it gets "stuck" close to the edge of the first). I can't kill X w/ a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, but the computer is not actually locked up--I can ssh in and do stuff. Xorg.0.log doesn't seem to have anything useful, but if I look at dmesg it's full of this:
[drm:radeon_lock_take] *ERROR* 1 holds heavyweight lock
Anybody know what to do?

hmpf, I have xorg-x11 6.8 on my main system and my laptop.

My main system's cpu,ram and hd are all considerably faster than my laptops.

On my main system konsole takes about 2-3 seconds to load, on the laptop less than one.

something's defenatly wrong here, it didn't use to be like this :(

//edit, if I unprelink my main system (laptop isn't prelinked) the startup time is almost 4 seconds for konsole...

I've tried fc-cache -f as root, I've tried taking out fontdirs that arn't valid, tried turning off the speedo module, my cflags are:
"-O3 -march=athlon-xp -mtune=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"

I use reiser4 on both laptop and main system, and no it wasn't tar'ed down, I used rsync.

Can I do the CVS install of xcompmgr even when I have it emerged on my system? Or will it mess up, since CVS installs it a different way? And also, if it comes into portage, can I upgrade and get rid of the CVS version through portage?

You can install it without any worries about screwing up what's going to happen when xcompmgr enters portage.

but i'd do:

Code: Select all

emerge -C xcompmgr

then make the cvs version

and when you notice the new version of xcompmgr in portage, do a 'make uninstall' for the cvs xcompmgr, then emerge xcompmgr.

OR if you're really crafty (and want to use the cvs sources often), edit the ebuild and make a different version of xcompmgr ebuild and point it to the cvs sources and emerge it that way.

but i'm pretty sure you can just make install over what you got now w/o any worries.

To add, xcompmgr by itself does not lockup glx apps. As soon as I use transset, then glx apps crash X. Simply closing xcompmgr, then use the glx app, everything works ok.

I have a geforce 3. Xorg 6.8.0 loaded awfully slow compared to 6.7.0. Why is this?

Does 6.8.1 run faster? Can anyone help? Do people have the same problem? Thanks.

I have a GeForce 4 MX 420 card, and I haven't experienced anything similar. XOrg loads very fast compared to XFree 4.3.0-r6, which was on my box before the update.

I'd like help installing Xorg 6.8.0, acording to http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Xorg_X11_and_Tranparency you only need to set a keyword and emerge xorg-x11. But no matter what keywords I set (im on a amd64 system) the only thing that shows up in emerge is 6.7.0-r2! And I have emerged portage, I have done emerge sync etc, but still just 6.7.0!
:?
I've tried downloading the lastest 6.8.1 tarball, but since there's no install instructions with it, I can't install it (in a file called Install is says the install instuctions are in INSTALL.TXT, but the file doesn't exist).
So, please, could someone explain just HOW you install Xorg 6.8.0 or 6.8.1?

Did you add this to package.unmask?

Code: Select all

>=x11-base/xorg-x11-6.7.99
And also add it to package.keywords?

Also, whenever I try and do ./autogen.sh, I get this error:

Code: Select all

autoreconf-2.59:automake failed with exit status: 1
Any ideas?

If I do it a second time, I get this:

Code: Select all

autoreconf-2.59: running: automake --add-missing --copy
configure.ac: 9: `automake requires `AM_CONFIG_HEADER', not `AC_CONFIG_HEADER'
automake-1.5: configure.ac: `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE' must be used
autoreconf-2.59: automake failed with exit status: 1
