xorg-x11-6.8.0 Hosed My Screen Settings?

Post by MickKi » Sat Sep 11, 2004 8:05 am

Hi All,

Just emerged xorg-x11-6.8.0 and then ran dispatch-conf. I noticed that it changed the keyboard driver in my X11/xorg.conf, but nothing else in that file. It did change a number of other configuration and script files (around 22 of them).

Well, as soon as started X (startx) my screen is now tiny, perhaps as small as 1/6 of its normal 1024x768 size, giving me an almighty eye strain trying to write this message. 8O

I can't explain why this happened and not sure how to fix it. Could you please help - I need to work on this machine today and if I don't get it going I will have to abort emerging OOo and re-boot into M$windoze (aargh!)

These are my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log in case you spot something of interest:

@ MickKi:

Could you possibly edit your post so it's not 4 times the width of a screen, it's the fonts line after

Code: Select all

(**) FontPath set to
It won't affect the post but if you can break that line it'll stop it being so wide (not being niggly but it is nearly impossible to read as it is)

Thanks :D

Thanks for a quick response!

It looks OK on my puny screen (it wraps around), but I changed it anyway.

Please let me know if there's anything relevant to the screen size problem you might spot.

Wow, thanks very much, it's perfect here now :D

I'll look into my settings, looks like I might have missed an option to wrap it around, but many thanks anyway.

Code: Select all

Section "Monitor"

        #DisplaySize 320 240 # mm
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "SAM"
        ModelName "SyncMaster"
        DisplaySize 312 234
 ### Uncomment if you don't want to default to DDC:
        HorizSync 30.0-96.0
        VertRefresh 50.0-160.0
        Option "DPMS"
EndSection
Believe me, I am no x11 guru but could it be this section of your config? The display size seems very small? If not, I really don't know, I have given up on 6.8 at the moment and am happy back with 6.7.0-r1, I'll give it another go in a couple of weeks.

hi,
to disable dri sections doesn't work for me . My gtk2 apps keeps crashing. There are no hints in the log files. I'm using gcc 3.4.2, that maybe the problem..? Any other suggestions?

Thanks PickledOnion!

I've always set it to that size and it worked fine. It refers to the visible physical size of my 17" monitor.

Are there any patches for xcompmgr that change the shadows? For example make them smaller or let them look different..?

I haven't had much luck with xorg 6.8
With KDE 3.3 about 5 seconds after I run xcompmgr -c I get a signal 11 and X restarts. With XFCE instead of a signal 11, X locks the system hard and all I get is a jumbled screen. In the 5 seconds after I enable everything, the shadows and transpency look really good, if only it would stay around a bit longer :x
I'm using nvidia's 6111 drivers.

@Raistlin:
if you had the nvidia dirver loaded already the you would need to rmmod nvidia first..

If all else fails try rebooting (assuming you havent already)

good luck

Since updating to 6.8.0, I'm back to not being able to start Win4Lin. The only way it will try to start at all is to give the commands "export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1" "win" from the terminal window. It gets as far as the login. After the login, I get nothing. It just sits there with the blue screen. Is anyone else having this problem? I'm not getting any help so far from the Win4Lin mailing list.

Lol, gotta love 6.8.0 ... now I've got a new toy to play around with! :)

I found it very handy to have a few transset's in the quicklaunch menu so i can easily switch windows.... any people perhaps have other techniques ?

@phlashback:
well, you underestimate my actions ;)

i already removed the module, rebooted, re-emerged nvidia-XXX, reconfigured my kernel,...

other ideas?

thank you.

Speed up xorg

Post by DFanick » Sat Sep 11, 2004 11:41 am

Recompiling glibc with USE="nptl" enabled speeds up my (afterwards also recompiled) xorg6.8.

http://gentoo-wiki.com/NPTL

ut2004demo runs a bit faster.

Kwin-patch for Kde and automatic translucent windows ...

Post by LeavingSuSE » Sat Sep 11, 2004 12:35 pm

Today i found this on Kde-look.org. It`s by thomas12777.He is the coder of baghira :)

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.ph ... n=72236019

He made a patch for kwin that gives kde some kind of support for translucent windows. No need to use transset anymore and only inactive windows get transparent :)

If i have time to recompile kdebase i will try it.

nvidia + 6.80 + composite + RenderAccel is working great here :). Resize is a bit slow and has some artifacts where Damage doesn't update some parts of the window, but I don't resize often so it's not a big issue. Being able to change / selectively set shadows would be nice though...

Thta's strange, I heard when you recompile glibc with nptl, you'll have to rebuild your entire system because everything is compiled without NPTL support. I started from scratch with nptl, so that's ok for me.

Nope, recompiling glibc with USE="nptl" is sufficient. No need to
recompile everything. Xorg 6.8 is running wonderfully here, even
though all the xcompmgr magic is just way to slow on my Mobility
Radeon 7500 :(

Modified xcompmgr

Post by blubber » Sat Sep 11, 2004 4:19 pm

Hi all,

I just modifed xcompmgr-0.1_pre20040821-r1. I've added some features to control the look of the clientside shadow. And I removed the serverside shadow option (-s), heres a small list of changes:

Removed Server side shadows.
Changed SHADOW_OPACITY to int shadowOpacity, which
can be set with the -o
Added -i to control shadow distance.
Added optional argument to -c to control shadow radius.

As you can see I've added the -c -i and -o switches to control the shadow. Also, I added a help (./xcompmgr -h).
You can download this version here
Just unpack, run ./autogen.sh (don't mind the error) then run ./configure, then make and optionally make install.

I've posted uploaded some screenshots, just to give you an idea. You can find them here

Note: You _have_ to specify the arguments directly after there switch, without any spaces. So -c 20 should be -c20.

I made it myself :). Very simple php script.

By the way, I tried adding different shadows for focus and out-of-focus windows. But that doesn't work (yet). Maybe i'll try again tonight.
