i checked : no damage extension if I use xcompmgr with the ati drivers
with the xorg radeon driver : it works, but if i use xcompmgr, that's awfully slow :/
thats your issue, you don't have opengl & dri going for your gx card
so the damage extension, can not work correctly. so it says there isnt one.
you need GL/dri and then try ;)

yeah, but since then, xv has come out with a new version. and i believe,
a fix to this issue, has been included in it. ;)

Ok, got something. My problem is that when i enable dri, xorg crashes out with "Caught signal 11". What ever the hell that means. Anyone have any ideas? It worked perfectly in 6.7.0. I got a readeon 9800 pro.

hmm i just emerged 904 and it didn't fix my problems with xcompmgr. using xcompmgr and any glx app (glxgears, mplayer -vo gl2, etc) it does a hard freeze and i can no longer use X. I can ssh in and run things normally, however. Anyone have any ideas? I'm using nvidia glx btw

Option "RENDER" "Enable"

lets you use the -vo gl2 driver

but glx still crashes.

Has anyone had any success fixing the problems with ati-drivers crashing on any OpenGL-related events such as running glxgears or glxinfo and the errors in the Xorg log?

Code: Select all

No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = -1 (-1), nplanes = 0

man, thats what im talking about
it happens with nvidia too, its obviously an xcompmgr problem.
I reckon xorg is cool, we jsut need to wait for people to develop proper implementations of the damage and composite extensions.

Here glxinfo and glxgears run fine with xcompmgr -c on. I am using the latest masked nvidia-kernel with a fx5900xt card.

but does quake3 work? or any heavy opengl apps??? like xscreensaver gl stuff?

I can also get glxinfo, glxgears working and some basic gl apps to work some of the time, but often crashes.

There must be some opengl functions that do not bode well with xcompmgr, ive even had 2 hard locks.

BTW, this thing had been delayed already -- when will it officially come out? its way past 03 sept 2004 and 25 aug 2004... (vapourware...)

*of course, they need testers, but for its already working for most of us, like the redhat users, and we gentooers too*

Can't really use any of the 6.8 snapshots since playing Enemy Territory always hangs my notebook (with Radeon Mobility 9000) at some point. This never happens with 6.7.

So maybe it is stable on 2D, but not on 3D.

vapourware = a computer program which is advertised but which is not yet or is never made available

Hm... the software is available and it's running quite well (RC4). Calling it vapourware it's a bit wrong, right? ;-)
And no, they are not pushing the release in the next year, but just taking the needed time until it's done. There souldn't be any big changes between RC4 and final, so where is the problem? :-)
I'm personally reallly happy how RC4 is running on my system. Yes, there are some problems using xcompmgr, but in the Release plan http://www.freedesktop.org/XOrg/XorgReleasePlan they set it off, because the extension is not production ready.

I tried right now to play UT2004 with xcompmgr off and It's running perfectly (nvidia binary driver).

Color me im-frickin'-pressed. Check this out, although I'm sure you all have similar eyecandy: http://www.carrieandbrian.info/Screenshot.png

I was wondering if anybody figured out how to get drop shadows off of GDesklets items.

Also, does anybody know of a way for XScreensaver to turn off xcompmgr whenever it starts up? I'd hate to have to kill the process every time I leave the computer, y'know?

ive got 904 working (nearly) fine, eccept that firefox wont run anymore, it gives me this:

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/MozillaFirefox/mozilla-xremote-client: Error: Failed to find a running server.
No running windows found
/usr/bin/firefox: line 388: 12134 Segmentation fault $mozbin "$@"
any idea?
and does anyone else feel that this version is slightly less stable than 903?

Did you try to recompile firefox?

I had the same problem, it is necessary to compile xorg with USE xprint and no -xprint. It was my problem

Good luck ...

my problem seems to be an application level problem. if i dont run firefox (my only running gtk app), the glitches get way less dramatically.
