of course aside from those..i mean, is anybody else here in the forums,
working on resolving bugs, issues, etc? or are we all just whiners and waiting

For those who wonder about the mentioned SiS support, if you compile the current snapshot, and then add the Option "DRI" "On" to your videocard, and load the dri module . . then . . .

You get told that your chipset doesn't have DRI support yet. Oh well, I wasn't expecting DRI any time soon from Thomas. On the bright side, I didn't realise the RENDER extension required specific enabling, and now my laptop gets a crazy 168fps over 112 in glxgears! Transparency does work though.

Oh and on my nvidia-based desktop it looks v. purtay indeed with RENDER etc. on. Now I need to work out how to use mplayer without killing xcompmgr.

Yes, renderaccel is on, and AGP is properly configured as far as I know. I have no problems running any sort of games plenty fast.

Were there significant changes to the 6800 2D acceleration? I had just assumed that the card was clocked faster and that made the difference. I've talked to someone on a 6800 and he says composite actually seems faster than normal X11 (because of the double buffering and such).

Then again, with the newer cards you also get more agp bandwidth (8x versus my 4x), so that may do something, too.

xcompmgr options: what do they mean?

-c and -s = shadow (client side or server side)

-f = fade

-s = ?

-n = ?

-a = ?

without options = ?


PS. ati radeon 7500, dri open drivers... deadly slow (unusable) with transparencies (xserver with Xvesa was faster!), only shadows (client side) work well, best thing is that if I move a window over another (for example gnome terminal over evolution) there are no more "ghosts"...
xv and x11 work, opengl works too, but every few seconds there are framedrops, so games are unusables

without options is the same as -n

-a doesn't do any compositing. It uses normal X11 to draw the windows, so it's faster than any other mode, but you don't get any nice effects. Essentially it just double buffers your windows, I guess.

-s does pretty lame looking drop shadows.

for those who didn't know it, freedesktop's xserver transparency is ridiculusly much faster than xorg's, even with vesa driver on xserver.

So there is a LOT of room for improvement in the xorg driver

There's nothing in the changelog about -S, so I turned it on.

Switching virtual desktops is now delayed, but all at once.

From what I can tell, it appears to draw the whole screen to an offscreen buffer, and then when there's no more updating necessary, it blits it to the screen. (Edit: I haven't looked at the code. That's just how it appears visually)

For example, turn it on and resize a window. You won't see any updates until you stop moving the mouse. And in normal xcompmgr, changing virtual desktops repaints move down the screen visibly, while with -S they happen all at once.

Doesn't seem like a usable mode right now.

Wow, using -C with xcompmgr really sped things up. Typing this through an xterm (xcompmgr breaks Eterm),

EDIT: I just noticed a wierd bug. Any windows I opened before the term runnning xcompmgr have a messed up pixmap on one of the title bar buttons, but any opened after the window running xcompmgr run fine. Very strange.

Heh, it could have been much like the undocumented "-f" command (which might be undocumented for good reason, arguably, considering how it doesn't work ), and my copy of xcompmgr might have been out of date.

That's because you're using xorg's radeon drivers instead of ATI's official radeon drivers. There's probably an ebuild for it, an ATI user would know more (I've got an nVidia card). Try searching the Docs Tips & Tricks section of the forum for ATI or radeon, for more info and help.
