Doom3 is out!!!

Post by ckenda1 » Sun Aug 01, 2004 6:01 pm

Hey all,

I walked into my local Best Buy this morning to buy a DVD player and low and behold they had a table with Doom3 on it saying... It's Here EARLY!! I was like sweet, since I thought it would not hit stores til Wednesday. Anyway I picked up my copy and there are no linux binaries on the CD (not that this was ever confirmed), but I wanted to know if anyone has any ideas when/where the linux binaries will be released?

Thanks in Advance!!

BTW installed the game on my windows box... all i have to say is OMG!!!

I don't know if there's a confirmed date, but here's a quote from Todd Hollenshead's .plan:
... Linux binaries will be available very soon after the PC game hits store shelves.

It's already available on USENET too, so I guess it must have hit the shelves early!

I hope by "very soon" he means days and not weeks.
I suck at signatures.

Yeah, I saw it on website removed but I thought it had just leaked early. I contemplated downloading it (even though I have it pre-ordered) so I could play it earlier, but changed my mind. I just hope this means the UK release date has been pulled back aswell.

EDIT: Removed website address. --pjp

At linux-gamers.net you can pre-order the linux version. However, it has a potential release date of December! Why even bother, i will have installed windows on my computer and finished it by then.

I'm hoping the linux binary will be available when the game is officially on sale in the UK - about the 13th.

If not, by that time, I may well have caved in to temptation and either try to run the torrented game under wine or, *vomits*, stick a temporary XP install on the hd.

Please, id, get cracking with those linux binaries! ;)
All effort is useless.

Here's hoping they're not using the Neverwinter Night's definition of "very soon after the PC release" 8O

Please understand that discussing warez could cause problems for Gentoo. Please do not discuss warez at all.

Thanks.

Carmack and id have a lot of experience porting games to linux... and since they wrote D3 from scratch, I'm pretty sure they wrote it in a way that is easy to port to other platforms. I'm pretty sure we'll see linux binaries this week (my guess is friday).
if only I could fill my heart with love...

Picking it up in 30 min, hope it runs in cadagy, calgary, capagy or whatever (winex). No windows, gave it to my sister, I might be stuck waiting if winex doesn't work. I couldn't sleep all night, I............must...............play...............doom....................3. I thought the store was going to give me a big speal about not selling me it till the 5th but he said if i had it reserved(which I did, 8 months ago) he'll sell me my copy when it gets in. That is last night, this after noon, or tonight, so i might have to wait as long as tonight to get it.

I think I'm going to take the plunge and make a game based on it, my brother got his role playing game published (http://irongolemgames.com/) and it's selling pretty well(in actually brick and mortar (the stuff that glues the bricks together) stores, in the US and Canada so far). He'll have miniatures by December, so I'll take the book, miniatures, and a quick demo in and get money to make it from somewhere. Anyone any good at modeling characters for doom3, uh, I guess only id knows that really  .

Oh yes, and go buy my brothers book http://irongolemgames.com/ and support a doom3 based game. The more he sells the more money I can get to make a game. It will run on linux first (we all use linux) then windows, possibly OS X before windows, but run on all three if and when it comes out.

Sorry for long rant, very very tired, no sleep.

Thanx,
Stan

TTIMO has allready been quoted months ago, as saying that the linux version does work. I presume they are just finishing it off...

I just called, It will be in between 12 or 1, so in 90 to 150 min I'll have it. I hope within that time the linux version is magically put out or cedega (looked up the name) works with it.

Crossing fingers.

Thanx,
Stan

Oh man, did you try the new cedgega, what hardware are you running it on? I have a p4 3.2 with a fx5600go in it(notebook) and a gig of ram. Did cedega just not install it or when you ran it did it just get so far? I guess I'll know soon enough, but maybe it will work for me, I hope.

i have latest wine from portage and latest winex 3.3 & cedega built from cvs.

the installer didn't run for me in wine, but ran fine in cedega.

when running the binary in wine or winex it winged about disabling debuggers, in cedega it just hung with a blank screen. win98 moaned about not being nt.

i'll just wait until the linux binaries are out, i'm not gonna spend god knows how much on winxp just to play doom.

the pay version of cedega may work better.

Make sure cedega is set to report winxp, this makes a ton of the newer games work so i hear, mine is set by default it seems, but cvs deosn't do that. I have the pay version, it only costs 5 bucks, get a one month subscriptoin, well, let me try it first before you go buying it. But if it works for me all you would need was a one month subscription, next month it will run on linux anyway.

Stan

Did those of you who got it working with cedea have to "Install" the game from the CDs, or could you just copy a working windows install over and run cedega on the exe?

i played it for about 20 minutes with wine, not cedega nor winex.

i did not install it, but copied the files from the cds as instructed
in another doom3 thread on these forums (doom3 - first impress-
ions i believe, second page).

it's not perfect, since the monitor and keypads do not display any-
thing except for static, but apart from that it works fine.

nope, can't get it working, man, i have to wait for the linux stuff to come out. I really really hope it doesn't take long. I guess I'm better off than the OS X people, I shouldn't complain.
