Coaster burning software

  • Quote

Post by Lokheed » Fri Jul 16, 2004 4:15 am

I have been reading about Coaster and it looks like the best software for burning to use with GNOME. I found an ebuild off a link from the official Coaster site but the dev says its broken.

I am wondering if anyone else uses this program and how they installed it. I want to get some feedback before I fubar my system. It took ages to set it up error free so I am paranoid about installing stuff now that might break it :)

i would recommend u to try k3b instead. I find that k3b is better than Coaster.
Yes k3b is a KDE app but still can get it to work in gnome like what I'm doin now. It the closest app to Nero for Win I personally feel.

Thanks for the reply. I have read a lot of people say Coaster is iffy on the burning, churning out some coaster quite frequently...not my cup of tea. Had enough bad burns on my first burner years back, dont need to be brought back to those days...

I dont really want to install an extra 100 MBs and parts of KDE to get K3B running. I have used it before and do agree it is THE best out there (Almost better then Nero, certainly more responsive) but I can always boot into Windows if I ever need to burn anything, not that I do very often anyway.

I will keep track of coasters progress though :)

Coaster is nowhere near done yet.

not even all of libburn is complete yet, let alone a GUI that uses it.

wait a while, and it'll get done. the author is getting married in the next few days, so don't expect much progress for a while. :)

until then, use K3b. if you don't want to install all of KDE, emerge kdelite, and then emerge k3b

There is also xcdroast. A bit clunky but it always gets the job done. Its quirks are easy to get used to as well.

Thanks guys. I never heard of KDElite, will have to look into it. XCDroast looks ok but its not very pleasant on the eyes...when will people realise the package is gotta be just as nice as the product ;)

If you're using Gnome then you can just use Nautilus' built-in CD burning software. It's always worked fine for me, but then again you might need to do something that I haven't tried.

I've never heard of kdelight either! Sounds interesting. However, I can't seem to find it in portage?

Code: Select all

# emerge -s kde | grep lite
#
(Returns nothing?)

I am currently a user of XCDRoast. I've never gotten a chance to use K3b since I didn't use KDE long enough. However, it sounds like people have high praise for it.

Can anyone comment on Coaster's performance? Anyone know much about how far along they are in development?
