nVidia FX5200 and TV input under Linux

  • Quote

Post by VinzC » Sat Jul 17, 2004 8:29 pm

Hi.

My video card is an nVidia FX5200. It has two output connectors and has TV input. I wondered if I could use it under Gentoo and how?

Thanks.

bet you cash that's a TV-out, so you can display your picture on your TV.

if your card had a TV tuner on it, you'd probably be seeing a big square aluminum box on your video card. not just a small box, mind you. this thing would be pretty darn huge.

so chances are, you'll want to be looking up how to plug your computer into a TV, and not the other way around. :)

Lol :-D

Well, trust me when I say it's a TV-In... I've got an ASUS GeForce FX 5200 and - frankly - given the price I paid for it, there must be a TV-In.

Naa, seriously. There is an extension multimedia connector. It has S-VID IN, COMP(osite) IN, S-VID OUT and COMP(osite) OUT signals. The connector is plugged into a small din looking connector on the video card.

The card was shipped with Asus PowerDirector for video capture. Setup installs an analog video capture driver. And it does have a S-VID decoder inside. But the CDs are only for Windows - heck .

So are you still telling me I'm dreaming? :-p

ok, about tv out though. which is what i thought this was about..
(but i guess it isn't after all lol)

anybody got any links/guides/etc on how to get tvout working flawlessly
on a GeForce-brand Svid out?
i bought a shiny new pci GeForce4 MX 4000 PCI with Tv Out (SVID) ..
so i surely hope that i'll be able to utilize it quite a bit.

thanks for the suggestions/help in advance!

KinkPunk,

Just installing the nVidia drivers should do the trick. At least it is how it works on Windows. I haven't tried to connect my Linux box on my TV yet as I'm more interrested in TV-IN :).

HTH.

the new nvidia drivers for linux are a dream, im seeing like a 30% increase
in performance compaired to the older ones on the same card.
its pimpness..
hopefully the tv out will work flawlessly too.
im building my total system, then i'll test it ;x
hehe

Hi VinzC,

Do you happen to have the "Asus v9520 Home Theater" card?

I'm thinking of buying this one, IF:

1. ... the TV tuner is supported by linux

2. ... TV out works good with Linux

Before I found this thread, I opened my own about this card here.

From what I could find on the RivaTV project, it seems this card is supported, as it is listed in their card list under the tuner section.

Did you have any luck getting TV-Out and the Tuner working well with this card?

No, I haven't got that one. I have a V8460 series. But as far as TV-IN and out are concerned, I didn't buy it intentionnally for Linux. I Switched a few weeks afterwards. I've seen riva-tv is part of portage but it requires booting with non-framebuffer features.

I find it annoying but I'll try it when I have a little time.

In fact I didn't connect my machine to the TV yet. I expect it's not that difficult under Linux. Under W*dows I just had plug the cables and that's all. Here I expect some tuning of XF86Config so that it works with the GUI part.

And I've still not tried the TV tuner yet. Guess I'll do it soon.

@VinzC:

I have the same card as you have, and I've been looking all over to get TV-in working for my MythTV box, but I discovered on rivatv.sf.net that the driver for the card is still under development :(

I guess you (and I)'ll have to wait until rivatv supports the card properly...

Cheers,
Will.

bushvin,

Try zapping. This is what I've installed on my Linux box (though I still haven't tried it). It doesn't require switching to no-fb or anything.
