Where do you work?

I have been browsing the gentoo forums for some time now and noticed that many of you make posts from work (as do i). This made me wonder what type of job the average Gentoo user holds down. I am sure there are a large number of Developers and IT people out there, but what about everyone else?

I work for a product development company, developing OpenGL based statistics tools.
Full House sucked.

I'm doing temporary admin and secretarial work at the school I did my A-levels at, and I do some occasional work designing databases and maintaining a website for a church nearby where my dad works.

I'm looking for jobs at the moment, for when I get married.

I'm looking for a Job. Just out of highschool, no references... But have been applying... Then again Michigan isn't the best state to get a job in. lol, the amount of teens that work has risen something like 15% from last summer, so that's really bad for me :-(.

oh well, I'm still waiting for a call from Micocenter...

Modding and overclocking can get expensive, after all, especially when you do it to a small network. :D

I work help desk/software testing/windows installer maintainer/system configurator/network admin/insert new function here... at a small (13 employees) mostly windows  development shop that does IVR (interactive voice response) and emergency notification systems. I have managed of course to work some linux machines in (not hard to convince the boss when they work well and are cheap) to do things they are good at (database server (oracle and mysql) / bug tracking). Apparently we are going to be helping a company implement some linux voicemail systems in with their switches (they requested linux) so it looks like my boss may get a better understanding of it soon. I felt pretty good that he was confident enough to take the job based on the fact he trusts my linux skills.

Not my dream job, but it pays the bills.

Web Design/Coordination for local council.

Meant to be a C++ programmer but that's gone up the spout past few years, not sure whether to try and get back to that or change careers.

I currently work as a small engine mechanic in a lawnmower repair shop. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering so I'm still looking for an engineering job. Working as a mechanic pays the bills while I'm looking for something better (not to mention I make alot of money on the side fixing up and selling used lawnmowers and fixing my neighbor's equipment).

One of my problems is that I hate to part with stuff. ;)
Right now I "only" have four water cooled machines, with a fifth to be done soon........

I could sell stuff, I suppose, but that would take away a large part of the fun for many of the people who water cool: building and optimizing their own water cooled machine.

As for those who want to water cool without any hassles- there are some solutions that are better than what I can do for the money already available.

But I'm always available to help those who wish to try H2O for themselves, at no charge. ;):D

I have an unpayed internship at a church doing IT work, then my boss at the church runs his own computer consulting business where I do overflow work for him. Most of the time I am diagnosing client machines, bringing them back to the bench, replacing hardware, reinstalling Windows, adding new users, working on the servers... basic stuff like that.

$15USD/hour... i don't complain, lol.

Well degree's are a dime a dozen along with certifications, but I think it is more of a "be at the right place at the right time" in todays markets.

Depends what you want to do/what your talents are. If you are planning on going into software development what Apple programs have you written so far (and they better look pretty! ;) )?

A degree will get you an interview but you have to WANT the job and show it. Be forward in your job search. Make a lot of cold calls. Talk to secretaries (they know everything about the company and love to gossip usually). fax your resume to EVERYONE. If you really want a job at apple when you graduate then make some contacts now BEFORE you graduate. Find out who is doing the kind of job you would like to do and send them a letter, not an email, expressing your interest in Apple and where you stand in college. Make sure to mention that you answer tech questions on Gentoo that concern the Mac hardware. And above all else be persistent. Never give up. Managers love people who wont take no for an answer and show initiative.

Good luck! And keep me posted.
