nfs mounted /home and distinct setups

I have a nfs mounted /home folder. If ever I start Gnome on two different workstations, it causes problems.

- Mozilla complains
- Autolauched programs are, well, launch (two Gaim instance autologins race).
- other issues I have yet to discover.

Is it possible to have distinct autolauches, say, based on the hostname? I'm also thinking tampering with the /etc/env.d of Mozilla to see if putting a /HOME in there might do the trick.

I've got around similar problems by using symlinks.

Each machine on my network also nfs mounts /home, but they all have a /local_home/ folder containing more folders of the names of the users, sorta like /home does. When users want faster access to some data, or wants to make it machine specific, they move the folder of interest from their home. (ie ~bill/.cxoffice) to the local home (ie /local_home/bill/.cxoffice) and create a symlink in their home to the local folder (ie ~bill/.cxoffice -> /local_home/.cxoffice).

I'm pretty sure that will work, but then your bookmarks, cookies, font preferences, etc. will be machine specific too :(

Why is it that most of the wm are built with single instance running at a time? At least, this is clearly the way I see it.

I'm not too much in the mood to go hunt down the code the would do what I want (autostart based on hostname).

For now, I might simply opt too remove all autostarts and start apps manually instead.
