Internet Sharing with rp-pppoe

  • Quote

Post by Brother Dysk » Wed Jan 14, 2004 12:48 pm

I connect to the internet with rp-pppoe, seeing as to how I have 'dialup' ADSL. I have a few boxes on local network that take DHCP from the internet box. Any way to share this internet connection?

There is a good HOWTO in the netfilter.org website. It is quite simple to set up. All that is required is to build the iptables stuff into the kernel and then run the iptables commands to set up the rules. The init scripts take care of saving and reloading rules after rebooting.

you can also try net-firewall/shorewall if you dont want to play with iptables directly.
it comes with nice documentation and it's easy to setup for internet sharing and more.

example for share all trafic
Start IP forward first
#echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
Use IP tables for pppoe sharing
#iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE

Which will work, except that there is no security - a bad thing in today's Internet (you may get cracked real fast).

I haven't looked at the Gentoo setup of rp-pppoe, but the vanilla install (i.e. from roaringpenguin.com, not emerge) has a basic sharing [firewall] setup as well as standalone. In it the config script will ask which one you want.

For me, this rule work with my ADSL connection, but most of the web site are not accessible or just load at the half and the connection is slow.

Someone told me it was a MTU problem but how I can solve that with iptables?!?
