MPlayer and X.org

  • Quote

Post by Pithlit » Fri Apr 30, 2004 3:07 am

Basically I just want to view my videos in fullscreen with MPlayer (1.0pre4) on xorg.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo xv
just freezes.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo x11
plays fine but it won't scale to fullscreen.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo xover
replies "VO XOverlay need a subdriver" and exits.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo gl
plays but every pixel from the diagonal to the left upper corner gets somehow stretched (so basically I can only see what's going on from the diagonal to the right lower corner.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo gl2
behaves somewhat like "gl" except that now I get black screen.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo dga
reports "vo_dga: can't get modelines" and exits.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo sdl
freezes and kills the console.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo ggi
plays... but I can't scale it. (btw plays without X too)

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo fbdev
says "The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec." and I have to kill it from another console.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo fbdev2
plays fine but again... not scalable (also without X)

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo svga
hates X, without X the screen goes blank.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo yuv4mpeg
only gives me audio before it breaks down.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo vesa
just plain hates me... it just exits.

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo xvidix
tells me "vosub_vidix: Couldn't find working VIDIX driver" (SiS 630)

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo cvidix
plain and simple exits.

MPlayer was compiled with USE="sdl ggi svga -X -xv opengl mmx mmx2 matroska theora oggvorbis sse sse2"

If someone has any ideas (or suggestions for an alternate non-KDE and non-Gnome player) please... do come forward. (tried VLC and Xine... didn't like them).

Edit (30min later): I found out vesa works... from a virtual console (no X) and only as root. It adds an annoying black frame around the video tho... But it's the best I can do for now.

Why not just use -vo x11 with -zoom enabled?

mplayer -vo x11 -zoom blah.mpg

It will be slower then using xv but the video quality can be a lot better depending on what software scaler ( -sws ) you use.

Greatness! Thanks... that works :D and as of "why not just use..." I was a tad too frustrated to stop and think about what I'm doing

Thanks again.

uhmm

Code: Select all

USE="sdl ggi svga -X -xv opengl mmx mmx2 matroska theora oggvorbis sse sse2"
are you not using X at all? Since you tried x11 and sv as output, I'd imagine building mplayer with X and xv support would help

Xorg and xv works great for me, except for when I'm using a Xinerama setup, then it just doesn't like it and I resort to x11

the "X" flag is documented as "adds XFree86 support" so I figure it's a tad useless for xorg... "xv" just plain didn't work so I excluded it.

And yes... I tried compiling mplayer with those flags enabled first.

Looking at the ebuild for my current mplayer install: /usr/portage/media-video/mplayer/mplayer-1.0_pre4-r1.ebuild, it looks like having "X" as a use flag does this:

Code: Select all

    use X || use gtk \
        || myconf="${myconf} --disable-gui --disable-x11 --disable-xv \
                --disable-xmga --disable-png"
It makes sense that if you don't want the GUI then USE="-X", but it looks like that also turns off xv, which is not ideal

X is documented incorrectly, most likely, it should probably say "Adds X11 library support" 'cuase at this point all the different choices for what X server to use still make a libX11.so and whatnot.

If you already compiled with those options above, I'm not sure what to say. However, compile it again with X, as it looks like you need it for X11 windowing and XV support, and then let's see where you stand.

Also, posting a link to your xorg.conf couldn't hurt (or just post the whole thing ;-))

I'll post a link (don't like to spam with those huge conf pastes)... but first I need to get out of the bed and wake up.

I hear yah..
The man page for mplayer is huge but you can find lots of cool stuff if you take the time to look around.
Guess who has too much free time on his hands.. 8O
Anyway, glad to hear you got it working :D

OK... 1st: sorry I couldn't post earlier...

2nd: *rant* My ISP crapped out and guess who was to blame (according to them)

And now.... the promised link to my xorg.conf http://www.netsphere.ws/Random/xorg.conf

Now while I was out of contact with the rest of the world *sob sob* I discovered a couple of interesting things:

Under no circumstances does XV work while using the gui (gmplayer).. but I don't use the gui that often so it doesn't really bother me.

Running

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo xv
as a user is a no-no.
Running

Code: Select all

mplayer -vo xv
as root works perfectly... but only for the first video I run after starting X :x all the following videos just bail out.[/code]

I posted a workaround to the bug #47755 to the gentoo bugzilla:

The workaround is:
add
Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"
to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
in Section "Device" describing the ATI card.

my versions:
xorg-x11 6.7.0
ati-drivers 3.7.6-r1

my screen resolution: 1024x768 @ 32 bits colour depth

so far I have seen no adverse effects of using this option...

Wow people still read this after... 2 months 8O

And thanks for the help, but I don't have an ATI card... I have the SiS630. I'll try that anyway. Who knows, maybe it'll work.

I just switched to Xorg, and I am also having problems with xv. This is made even more annoying in that I switched in hopes of fixing bug 8927 (1 year and no stable ebuild with the fix!). I have a i810 chipset.

mplayer does not crash in my case, it gives me an error:

Code: Select all

(snip)
VO: [xv] 480x360 => 480x360 Planar YV12
X11 error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)

MPlayer interrupted by signal 6 in module: flip_page
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.
Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x5a)!
Here is my xvinfo:

bdonlan, did you try adding

Code: Select all

Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"
to

Code: Select all

/etc/X11/xorg.conf
?

Ah, thanks, that did it. I thought that option was ATI-only :/

This does work for me on a 915GM - *but* only, if I terminate kompose before!! This is unacceptable realy! It all worked fine with the previous version of xorg-server! Though, I'm not sure which one it was... Does anybody know, if the cause is found by the developers already?
