mplayer - video plays too fast, audio plays normal (solved)

Hello everyone!

I'm not as familiar as I might like to be with mplayer and some of the options it has. And from what I've read in the man pages, I'm not sure if my problem can be solved with options or not.

What I'm running into is a problem with playing videos. For example, I have a 45 second AVI from my digital camera that I made. I play it with mplayer, and it only lasts about 20 seconds. The video is going really fast, while the audio is normal.

I'm having this problem with all of the video formats that I've tried so far (AVI, MOV, MPEG, and WMV). The speed of the video varies, but you can definitely tell that there's a problem.

Any suggestions? It seems to be a significant problem since after my system rebuild, but it may also have been a problem prior to it as well.

Okay, I installed xine, and that works fine. Other than that, I'm still clueless about what might be going on.

Any ideas?

Going off a hunch here...
Do you have RTC compiled in your kernel? Are you overclocking or something?
I have RTC compiled in and I know mplayer acknowledges its presence when it starts up. If it uses a hardware clock to keep time, then perhaps it doesn't have to rely on the time information in the movie..

Just a hunch.

Forgive the ignorance, but what's RTC? I'm going to go see if I can find something that might be it regardless though, but not exactly sure what RTC is.

have you tried manually specifying the sample rate and/or frame rate?

iamben, Yes.. Doesn't make any difference.

I did not originally have RTC compiled in the kernel, and I am not overclocking. Now I do have it compiled into the kernel, and sitll not overclocking.

And, sadly, still having problems with it..

Okay, I have the issue solved.

Turns out it was apparently an issue with where mplayer was sending the audio. Even though I was getting sound at the proper rate, the video was sped up to over double what it should have been.

Well, after hunting around on the web, I came across this link. Down towards the bottom the user gave the suggestion to try -ao null to see if it corrected it. Well, you can read the little bit of chat there.

But, anyway, I tried it, and it corrected the video problem, and killed the sound. So, I did some more research on the -ao option, and after trying an incorrect setting or two, I have it figured out.

So, I added this line to my .bashrc after testing it out on several known problem files:

alias mplayer="/usr/bin/mplayer -ao sdl"

Worked like a charm. So far everything I have tested is playing the way it should be.

Just thought I'd share that I solved the problem.

You didn't try changing /etc/mplayer.conf, did you?
That's where I keep my beloved `ao=alsa1x`.
