And the changelog rather looks kinda too short and umimportant considering how important vmware has become in recent days..

arf, and I've just finaly managed to install 4.5.1 !!
By the look of the changelog, it seems that there is compatibility with 64 bits OS's ...
Well my version 4.5.1 is running just fine !
maybe I'll wait a little before installing a new one !

As my version 4.5.1 is working (almost) like a charm, at least for what I need, should I try to upgrade it as 4.5.2 is supposed to have an experimental support form amd64 ...

I used vmware-any-any-update68-x8664.tar.gz to get it to work and appart from the USB, everything is ok, and stable (i.e. it never crashed while I was using it).

Now that vmware-any-any-update68-x8664.tar.gz is obsolete and vmware-any-any-update70.tar.gz is out, well has any of you succeeded it compiling it ?

With my cutting edge config (2.6.7-rc2-mm1, GCC34) it won't compile the modules even with any-any70.

I'm back now to gcc3.3.3 and 2.6.5-rc1-gentoo and at last the modules compiled fine and vmware-config has setup the networking. I'm at a ssh connection so haven't tried more.

I've emerge the new kernel 2.6.7, and following this I've decided to emerge vmware 4.5.2, everything is going fine, but ... the bridge networking on /dev/vmnet0 doen't come up ... so at the end it's not working !!
The "old" 4.5.1 that wasn't made at all to work under 64bits OS, was indeed working just great, I'm going to switch back ... and hopefully it will work !

Well it's seems that the problem is comming for the 2.6.7, as it won't compile the vmnet driver ... gotta downgrade to 2.6.5r1 ...

For vmmon I needed to change "count" to "_count" in compat_mm.h.

I just emerged vmware-4.5.2 form the portage tree. I made a vmwar-config.pl. There I have this error:

Virtual machine monitor done
Virtual ethernet done
Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 failed
Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet8 (background) done
NAT service on /dev/vmnet8 done

When I start vmware I get this error.

I'd try typing "rm /etc/vmware/not_configured"

I believe that's the name of the file. If not, it's something very damn much like that.

Anyone tried to compile the vmware modules using the same kernel in a 32-bit environment and copying the necessary files to the 64-bit environment? I mean, bloody hell, this all sounds like a mess. I'm probably just going to have my girlfriend's penguin be 32-bit and install VMWare the good ol' fashioned way.

I'm running with kernel 2.6.7-gentoo-r11, and vmware 4.5.2 build 8848. Found no problems at all so far.

Have had no problems with the later 2.6.7 kernels and this version of vmware, even got the sound working. I can finally stop booting into windows! In fact, running matlab 7 in vmware, the 'bench'mark shows it is only marginally faster in windows than in vmware (there is some latency sometimes, tho not nearly as bad as vmware 3). I wouldn't really want to upgrade this now that is working perfert , but if someone starts reporting huge speed gains I would be tempted (would love to see windows running *faster* in vmware).[/i]

I have vmware 4.5.2 running on top of 2.6.7. Unfortunately, it craps itself everytime on startup. I need to keep a "snapshot" to revert otherwise it renders my hard drive "unconfigured" according to vmware.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I tryed rm /etc/vmware/not_configured, it allows me to start the service, but when I start vmware (the app) I get that msg agin, and the file /etc/vmware/not_configured come back...

I got this problem when manuall inserting the vmware modules to be loaded at boot time. Apparently the vmware startup script doesn't like it when you autoload the modules.

So,:

1. If you have the modules listed to autoload on startup, remove them and run modules-update
2. Run /opt/vmware/bin/vmware-config.pl

And your problem should go away.
