ati drivers + kernel 2.6.6 - Permission Denied??

Hello

I have just compiled a new kernel (2.6.6) but when I try to load the drivers for my ati card I get the following message:

./make_install.sh
- creating symlink
- recreating module dependency list
- trying a sample load of the kernel module
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.6/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): Operation not permitted
failed.

How can I fix this problem?

ati-drivers and 2.6.6 work fine here.... It looks like you're using DRM in the kernel. If you're using ati-drivers, there's no need for DRM (isn't there?). Just remove it from your kernel (you only need agp gart in there) and try that... It won't 'solve' your problem, but its a workaround.

The other thing you can do is chmod the file its trying to write, so it has the right permissions (maybe an ebuild or kernel makefile set the wrong ones, which is what's causing your problems)

I have been able to load the module.. But when I try to run a openGL app I have no 3D acceleration at all.

glxgears even gives me a slower framerate with fglrx

Did you install the drivers through portage (emerge ati-drivers)? It's usually better to do it that way than manually. That has nothing to do with the "Operation not permitted" error though - as RobMcM already said you probably just had DRM enabled in the kernel.

I have been able to load the module now. Thanx.. But I have a new problem. I don't have any 3d acceleration. I have already done a opengl-update ati.

When I look at the list of loaded modules i see that fglrx is unused even when being in x. I also did a fglrxconfig.

Are you using xorg? If so, you need to run "opengl-update xorg-x11" before starting it or 3D accel doesn't work. You could also try the fix in this thread. If that doesn't help, or you aren't using xorg, post your logfile so we can see what's going wrong. The file is "/var/log/XFree86.0.log" for XFree and "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for Xorg.

Try emerging the drivers again, and make sure that the /usr/src/linux symlink is pointing to your current kernel sources (remember to unload the fglrx module before emerging the drivers again).
