Yes, I know there is an "Official" Euro 2004 thread. But this isn't about Euro 2004 (which is an incredibly broad subject) but about Wayne Rooney.

Add to that the moderator didn't bother to drop in a notice that the thread was marked a dupe, and I'd suggest it's been hard done by.

Please restore the thread so we can continue to talk about Wayne Rooney. I wouldn't mind renaming the thread if it made the mods happy.

Well, it was I who reported the thread at a time when there was no replys. And from the first post there was IMHO nothing that qualified it for a new thread. The way I read it, you were just jubilant that England had won, thanks to Rooney. Now, it did go off on a tangent to be only about Rooney, but that wasn't obvious to me from that first post. So, yeah, why not restore it with a new subject and, of course, a poll with a couple of yes options.

. I created the thread because I thought it would be great if we could have all the matches in one thread rather than scattered in a hundred different threads.

You might try patience. For only US$50k/year I'd gladly do this as a full time job. Also, a PM would likely have achieved the same thing more quickly.
