Harry Potter Books

I personally like the books, I find them enjoyable to read. I realize it is not a hard read nor will I come out somehow improved by reading them. I read them just as something relaxing to read.

One nice thing is though they are kids books they are not written as if the kids that are going to read them are twits. She actually considers they are smart enough to realize there is death and fear in the world and includes that in the books.

I will also happily sit and watch a Disney cartoon, I take these books in the same light, put my mind at rest and just enjoy

I saw the first two movies and liked them (even though they are a bit kiddy), then read the books after and like them as well. When I read the 3rd book, I really enjoyed it. However, seeing the movie after reading the book made me feel like they rushed through the plot so quickly that they didn't do it justice. I guess that's just the way it works. I've read book 4 but not 5 yet.
Meh.

I've read Book 1 (Philosopher's Stone). I sort of enjoyed it, the positives were that she knows how to tell a story, the book flows and there's always something happening. However now my curiousity is satisfied I see no reason to read anymore, it's a kid's fantasy tale, and I don't really read fantasy books.

Friends have told me that you have to read all three before you really get into it, but I'm not going to make the effort, there are countless other books that I have more interest in reading. If I were to be cynical I'd say JK has cleverly caught onto something in peoples pysches, the omnipotence thing. Being more special than anybody else, better than other people, being chosen, oppressed when younger but after being brave eventually being told that you really are special.

From the little I gathered it's parallels Star Wars a lot too. What price Voldemart (Darth) being Harry's (Luke's) father, or Hermione (Lei) being Harry's sister and ending up romantically involved with Ronald (Han Solo). Not mentioning dead parents, raised by Aunt/Uncle that don't want him to fulfill destiny, force/magic, hagrid/chewbacca etc etc

They are enjoyable but not excellent. Books 3, 4, and 5 are a lot better than the first two.

I really liked the books, long before any prospect of movies, especially the later ones. Disliked the movies, though.

Oh, that makes sense. For a moment there I was imagining you had some bizarre collection of different editions or something. ;)

Working on it, buying the gf book 5 or her birthday, since they just released the hardback version in danish - previously this was only available in paperback, and we already wore our copy out.

Yeah, I'm a real addict, and movie 3 must die.. it butched the story and the werewolf just looks like a starved furless puddel.

The first two books were a little to whimsical for my taste. But the fallowing ones have not disappointed me one bit.

Well I thought they did as much as they could for being tranfering it in to a movie form. Being that if they included a lot of the parts that were missing from the book it would have ended up being a 4-5 hour movie.

I have Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen which my (ex) girlfriend bought me a few years ago. I started it on a plane flight once, but I've never managed to finish it.

Well I've read Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and managed to sit through the first two of the Lord of the Rings films and I also managed to sit through the first Hary Potter film...

I think I've had enough magic spells, wizards, goblins and the like to last me a lifetime!

Why is it okay for LoTR fans to complain but not for us Potter fans..

I would have gladly sat throught a 3-3½ hour movie which is what would have been needed to explain stuff, I mean they didn't even take 5 mins to explain the significance of wormtail, padfoot and friends, which would really have paid off when we saw the Patronus, since we would understand why Harry thinks it was his father.. Instead they do a prolonged busride scene with cool effects instead, and add stuff all over, reinventing the wheel..
I think the look of the movie was much better though, it feels more magical now, if only they would stop shifting places of everything, like the Wombing Willow, Hagrids house and the Griffindor entrance, it confusing..

I enjoyed them, although it's almost scary how escapist the books are when you think about it.. It's basically every child's fantasy, I'm sure. Getting wisked away to another world where you're "popular," "powerful," and can always get yourself out of trouble using your dumb luck alone.

I would have to agree with you there. I did feel cheated with a considerable amount of parts, particularly the whole Patronus thing. And I would have as well be happy to sit though a 3-3½ hour movie. But... Damn it, now your getting me to thing about it more and agree with you!

it's not that I think it was horrible, I'm more scared when I hear they will condense book 4 into a 2½ hour movie.. that just spells disaster to me. It should clearly be two seperate 2½ - 3 hour movies to get it all in, and that's without adding all the action elements the scriptwriter likes to use.

Because The Lord of the Rings is the book of the 20th century, and Harry Potter is a series of mediocre books, which try to sell as much as they can (as the movies do). I liked them myself at first, but then I realised they all have the same plot, the same characters, and the same lesson. Then the whole thing got really boring. I'm sure the next Potter book will be "Harry Potter and the Secret of Sales Market" or "Harry Potter and the Magic of Copy&Paste".

No offence. They're accurately written, but it's inside that matters, and The Tale of the Jewels and the Rings has much, much more meat on it.
