trying to install gentoo on a new computer

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

trying to install gentoo on a new computer

i just built my own computer, hdd unformated and everything

AMD Athlon xp 2600+
nForce2 chipset
40 gb maxtor hdd
no floppy disk drive

i downloaded the x86 gentoo universal livecd iso, and burned the iso to the cd, and ran it on my new computer.

my boot order is this:

cd-rom
hdd
fdd

when the computer started up, the cd-rom started whirring, but the thing came up with the message:

nvidia boot agent failed, media test failed
please check your cabling
ENTER SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE

(or something along those lines)

how come the gentoo cd kernel won't load up?

Have you checked you cabling? Is your CD-ROM drive powered and plugged into the IDE cable? (and is that attatched to the motherboard...)

How did you burn the ISO? Nero's 'burn image' or gcombust burn iso or whatever works fine for me, I just wondered if you just somehow burnt the files on the ISO rather than the entire image.

the cd rom reads my other windows xp back up cd fine, except that it tells me that i can only install it with "valid hp notebook series blah blah computers"

and yes i burned the image correctly, not the image itself...is the cd supposed to bootstrap itself?

erm... I was probably talking crap :) I thought maybe that only the files might have been burned, not the bootable part of the disk (a bit like if you copy files from a floppy without formatting it so its bootable). I'm not even sure you can do this, just a guess.
