Easiest way to do this; mount over TCP/IP

Basically, I have two computers with network adapters, one has a complete Gentoo installation, with /usr/portage/distfiles.
I want to install Gentoo on the "other" machine aswell, and mount the distfiles directory/partition on the "other" machine after booting from livecd. I do not have an Internet connection available, and I can't move the harddisk since the "other" machine is a laptop.
What do I need to install on my distfiles server? NFS?

You could use samba too. I don't know if the LiveCD has samba support, but you could boot from a Knoppix CD and install Gentoo that way as described in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml#doc_chap3 (Knoppix has samba support, so you could then mount your distfiles from your other machine)

i'd rather try using rsync to get the distfiles because it's alot easier to set up

modify /etc/rsync/rsyncd.conf at your host box.
add the following lines there:

Code: Select all

[distfiles]
     path = /usr/portage/distfiles
then start your rsync server:

Code: Select all

rsync --daemon
after that go to your new gentoo box and get the files:

Code: Select all

rsync -Pv ip_of_your_host_box::distfiles/ /usr/portage/distfiles/
that's all :twisted:

rsyncing is an easy solution if you want to install the same programs like on the other box but make shure - if this is your intention - that your portage dir, USE and ACCEPT_KEYWORDS flags are identical! that will make shure your second box doesn't want to get other packages.

in this case you should sync /usr/portage/ instead of /usr/portage/distfiles.

another solution could be setting up a ftp server and adding it to the GENTOO_MIRRORS variable in make.conf.

I think I'll look at NFS, it could be the best way to do this, to enable the laptop to pull files on demand.

I do not want to rsync the distfiles directory, since it is over 1G on my desktop machine and my laptop only has 340M HD. But I could of course I could copy only the necessary files to another directory.
