i have checked wiki.x.org and a few other places to no avail.
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/mga_drv.so does exist, so maybe its corrupt? what would i have to emerge again to fix? i have done opengl-update x11-xorg and emerge ati-drivers.

any ideas?

ps : i have used xorgcfg -textmode to set up my xorg.conf so i dont think its a problem there.

The driver for ATI-cards compiled by ati-drivers is called fglrx, not mga, so I think it is a problem with your xorg.conf. Perhaps mga doesn't work for ATI cards?

Try generating an XF86Config with fglrxconfig and then merge the driver section into your xorg.conf.

Wouha! Have never seen that before, but just a thought:
Did the symlink /usr/src/linux point to the sources of your currently used kernel, when emerging ati-drivers? This is vital so the kernel module gets compiled for the right kernel and is put in the correct /lib/modules directory.

Moreover, could you please post the last few lines of the output of dmesg after starting X failed. Also the output of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -e EE -e WW could be helpful, to see all errors and warnings.

ls -l /usr/src/linux gives
/usr/src/linux -> /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-gentoo-r1
so that seems fine, and since i have just re installed i am sure this is right.

a grep of the log file for EE and WW gives

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) Failed to load /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.so
(EE) Failed to load module "dri" (loader failed, 7)
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

i am loading the fglrx module (modprobe fglrx)...just fyi\

anything else you need to know?

Perhaps, you should remove the lines for "glx" and "dri" from xorg.conf, since fglrx also provide them, but that doesn't solve the problem, I think.

I've found to threads describing the same problem here and here.
A suggestion, that seems worth consideration IMO, is remerging xorg without the pie USE flag. Have you compiled it with that? (You can check the USE flags by equery uses xorg-x11.)

I've got exactly the same problem, and re-emerging with -PIE in my use flags made no noticable difference.

Sounds good!
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
I don't think, that's vital. It's just power management, and I don't really know, how to configure it.

If you haven't already tried it, remove the Load "bitmap" part from the "Module" section of xorg.conf. I don't think it's necessary. I don't have it, not very strong argument, though.

BTW, in order to get direct rendering and hardware accelerated OpenGL, you might want to try Load "glx" and Load "dri" back in there. I just saw, I have them, so maybe I was wrong, that their functionality is provided by fglrx. But they are not vital, so you could do it later.
ps : when i try startx as a non root user, i get Xauth : command not found.
Again just a guess, but is there a line with Xauth in the .xinitrc in your home directory, because on my system it's xauth with small "x" and since home directories don't get updated by emerges, it's may be a remain of XFree?
pps : wenn ich mal in Deutschland bin, kauf ich Sie ein Bier!
Danke sehr! :D
BTW: Du kannst ruhig Du sagen.

No, you're not. My fault: libbitmap get's loaded with my setup, too. Just without errors. :?

Perhaps, you could look at and post the errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, again.

Please, just warnings "(WW)", errors "(EE)" and their immediate surroundings, not the whole other crap (X is very verbose, when it comes to logs :)). Also, just FYI, when posting config files to the forums, it is nice to remove all the comments (usually the lines, starting with a "#").

(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)

thats all i get when i grep WW and EE from xorg.0.log. which as you say is not vital.

(II) LoadModule: "bitmap"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a
Duplicate symbol __i686.get_pc_thunk.bx in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a:bitmapmod.o
Also defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a

Fatal server error:
Module load failure

this is all that seems wrong in Xorg.0.log.

wow, i really am at a loss here cos everything else in the log file says whatever needs to be loaded is being loaded....

dr_dre

ps : sorry about all the comments in the conf file, but i have to copy it to another machine, reboot in windows, copy the log back (notepad buggers up the formatting) AND dialup is very expensive here. but i will try in future :)

Slowly, I've no Ideas left!

But I found a reference to this bug in a german post with the same problem. Basically it is all about hardened-gcc (I suppose you don't have that), but do you by any chance have -fPIC in your CFLAGS in /etc/make.conf?

If so, this could be it. Then, try recompiling (Sorry :() Xorg without that. At least that's, what they say there.

Hi guys,

Please quicksearch the forum for "libbitmap.a" and you'll find some topics with info as follows: there is something with the hardened stuff, so if you recompile your gcc and xorg with the -hardened flag that could make it work.

progress update : i did build my system to be hardened but somehow my profile says hardened. dont quite know how that happened but anyway. Recompiled xorg with static in the USE section of make.conf. that worked, i can now startx. which has brought on a whole new problem. i cannot use the fglrx drivers cos it says "no device found" even if all i change in the config file is "radeon" or "ati" to "fglrx". modprobe fglrx loads the module with no probs. i feel i need to use the ati drivers as the default ones are really really slow and ugly. (we are talking 5 mins to log into kde here)

any thoughts as to why i cant use the ati drivers??

Give us some lsmod lovin' ;) Have you configured your xorg.conf according to lspci -v output for your Radeon card?

weird weird weird. something is not adding up here. check this :
if i delete xorg.conf and\or XFree86config and "startx" with no config file,
it works. very slow, but it works. /var/log/Xorg.0.log has this to say about it

if i generate a config file using fglrxconfig\xorfcfg -textmode or any other i get the error "no devices found" when using
fglrx under the driver section of my config file (even after modprobe fglrx AND checking my device using lspci).

now here is the catch : if i modprobe the "radeon" module and put "radeon" in the driver section of my config file, it works.
so to sum up, fglrx does not work due to device not found, but using the same device, the radeon module does work.

lspci gives

I tried the following

I did emerge -C hardened-gcc; USE="-pic" emerge gcc xfree and works now ) Thankyou

and it still fails both xfree and xord-x11 report the same error. I have also tried booting knoppix and copying the configs over from there. Do you think it is a kernel issue? As in perhaps I need to compile support in for my ATI XL card that is embedded on the mobo. It is a supermicro board I just bought from newegg...any ideas? The error is the libbitmap.a is unreolved!

In my CFLAGS I had fstack-protector removed that and rememerged XORG-X11 and it works. I still had to use xorgconfig b/c X -configure gave me some new errors. But after setting up a generic xorg.conf I was able to start x and I now have gnome all setup... Hope this maybe helps
