I got e17 to install, but I'm having a few problems:

this is kind of wierd, but if I run enlightenment normally from my .xinitrc, it just segfaults, instead I have to run it as a background process and run something else (such as gkrellm2) in the forground as the hangup...strange

secondly, even once I do get it to run without segfaulting, it doesnt do anything! the background is pretty and all, but theres no menus, clicking on the desktop brings up nothing, etc..

I tried running e_setup, and that comes up with a display (and a really pretty spinner on the top :) ) but clicking on the buttons does nothing, it just stays in the same screen..

heres the output from enlightenment:

are you running as root (make sure you're not) ?
also, make sure you start fam ...

you should have menus :/

Okay, no I'm not running as root, as yes I am running fam..

I think the problem there was that enlightenment was still segfaulting, but it still left the background on the screen while gkrellm was there..

I recompiled e, and *occasionally* it will go long enough without segfaulting, and I can use the menu and whatnot, but I cannot run anything, since as soon as I try it segfaults. Heres an example of what I'm getting:
--snip---
BORDER CREATED AT 0x8130228
launch efsd... 21869
pid went splat! (21869)
it was efsd!
launch efsd... 21870
pid went splat! (21870)
it was efsd!
launch efsd... 21871
Configure for view: :1
---/snip---
so it seems to me the problem is with (duh) efsd. I tried recompiling that with no luck...argh, why do the sexy things in life always have to be so fiesty?

efsd did that while i ran as root ...

logging in as a non-root user fixed it ...

Your icons are probably not gone. Minimize a program then hit your middle mouse button. Your program should be in the list displayed.

iconbar

Post by crashman » Sat Nov 02, 2002 5:47 pm

I can't get the icon bar to work from my ._elayout dir (~/.e/desktop/default/.e_layout). It works if I use the build script to the appearance dir (~/.e/appearance).

get the iconbar generator script from $PREFIX/enlightenment/data/scripts/build_iconbar_db.sh modify the contents (self-explainary) then

Code: Select all

./build_iconbar_db.sh ~/.e/desktop/default/.e_layout

No, e_setup doesnt do nothing yet, and u need ferite patch to make some of the menu command to work, i.e exit enlightenment, desktop switching. Try go through the mailing list to find it. and of course u need to install ferite, just emerge ferite-0.99.4, ferite-0.99.5 will not work.

I've allready indicated the right way to have iconbar working
you can use first iconbar_left.bits.db (you will find it in /usr/e17/share/enlightenment/data/iconbar/) cp it in your home directory:
~/e/desktop/default/.e_layout/ you will have to create these directories

then cp /usr/e17/share/enlightenment/data/scripts/build_iconbar_db.sh to your home directory

edit this script and comment the second and the last line i.e:

#BIT=$1"/iconbar.bits.db"
#cp -f $PREFIX"/share/enlightenment/data/iconbar/iconbar_left.bits.db"

you can add lines like that "icon $SYSIC"/gnome-x.png" "x"

then sh build_iconbar_db.sh ~/.e/desktop/default/.e_layout
i just want to add that after running the script a file named iconbar.db is created you can edit it with edb_gtk_ed to add or remove icons or edit the script to create a new iconbar.db
it really works you just have to restart enlightenment each time you run the script
