Hi... this is my very fist installation of gentoo on my PowerBook G4 15". :D

I choose the Universial LiveCD installation without network. :?

I made my way through the documentation until step "6.d. Progressing from Stage 2 to Stage 3" (building the system packages).

I have already untared the stage archiv + the portage snapshot and copied the distfiles sourcecode to the hdd. Then I switched to the new enviroment. Until then everything worked fine. :D

But then: whenever i try to do

Code: Select all

# emerge system
emerge tries to download the portage files instead of using the ones I copied the the disk.

So, how can I make emerge use the files on the disk? Any suggestions? :(

what do you mean? i didnt use any modem. What is a "modem kbps"?

I used the Universial LiveCD 2004.0 because i couldnt get my internet connection working (pptp on ppc).

Stage2 and Portage Snapshot are from the CD.

I think that you can only do a stage 3 install without a network connection though I could be mistaken.

at least the manual says it should be possible to do stage 2 without network.

Isnt there a simple way to tell emerge where to look for the sources?

Are you sure the manual says that you can do a stage 2 install without a network? I dont think you can. I would just go with a stage3 install. Especially if this is your first time installing linux (not judging just saying if it is).

i don't think you can install it without internet you can just use stage 3 + GRP for without internet
because check here
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... t=1&chap=2 in stage 2 it sais "Not suitable for networkless installations" and same thing for stage 1 :)

Thanks. You'r right. :D I must have overread that ...

So the next step would be to get all the stage 2 stuff off my disk and untar a stage 3 archiv.

Another thing: to use GRP I have to download the packages CD as well, havn't I?

You can do a stage 3 with only the live CD. If you want to not have to download and compile KDE, X, etc then you need the packages CD but just to get a basic kernel and portage so you can emerge sync and emerge you don't need the packages CD
