for one know that if I had only been using gentoo for a month or so would not have been willing to donate
I've only been using Gentoo for a week (although I've been using Linux for 5 years or so) and I donated. Gentoo is the best thing to happen to Linux since Linus.
Thanks,
Dru

Unofficial count, NOT counting CD's, T-shirts, or anything like that. Unspecified donation amounts are assumed to be $10. donations in Euros are converted 1 Euro = $1 USD for simplicity's sake.

Current total is....

US$3070

Where can I see the total?

Also, I assume that all these donation will go to him and not to the gentoo developers/gentoo itself? Not that I am not more than willing to donate to gentoo itself (I have in the past), but just want to know what exactly I am donating to. :)

It will go to Gentoo. I don't really understand why everyone donates right now, but it's a good thing (TM).
I'm really wondering what Lovechild is doing nowadays...

Just found out the answers to my questions. And I have to say that you are wrong.

There are two types of donations. The donation link on the front page (www.gentoo.org) goes to Gentoo, but anything (including the donation link) from the Gentoo Store goes to Mr. Robbins.

I don't see why it wouldn't be. Once the money is donated, I would expect that it's up to [The Gentoo Foundation]* to decide how it will be used.

If it feels that it is best used by helping to offset Drobbins' $20,000 debt, then so be it. Every person in this thread who has donated has done so with the express purpose of helping out drobbins.

I'm so glad that I won't donate prior to me making any money (will take a long time).

I have been using Gentoo for about a week, but I already love it. I plan to start doing more with the open source community, and help support it more, but at the moment I don't exactly have money to throw around. I wont go into specifics because thats completely unnecessary, but I am in college and don't yet have a job :(.

HOWEVER, I personally emailed Daniel thanking him for everything he has done for the project, and promised that I will buy a shirt or something once they come out. Hell, I'm gonna have to buy shirts anyway right? So I haven't donated yet, but I will :)

Depends on your income

(If you have less than me you are a poor rat, but if your income is significantly higher than mine, you just have to donate). I don't understand what this has to do with attitude

btw: might be good, but could turn out to be really bad as well.

I think like this too, it can be a bad practice not in the particular case.
Many many other developers worked on gentoo and this is not a solution for Daniel to make many he must think in other directions corporate profile things make many and give support for corporate business model.

Thanks to all of the developers of Gentoo. It's a great distro and I'm sure it will remain that way.

Thanks to the users of Gentoo for providing all of the answers to questions and problems via these forums.

Thanks to Daniel. No-one should be in debt for helping to provide that which we all use and enjoy.

$50 donated.

Helping Daniel Robbins

  • Quote

Post by real_triad » Fri Apr 30, 2004 4:30 pm

i think the best effort is promoting daniel to work at some company but i hope so a linux company or like ibm or osdl, so he will keep helping gentoo development dan funding his family like trovald do
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And for gentoo foundation inc, i think the most viable solution is make a way to have member of some company or university that support gentoo like osdl or gnome so annual fund always there.. just IMHO (friend of Gentoo)

and making gentoo acceptable in enterprise (slashdot articel)

--------------------------------------------
sorry for bad english

I'm opposed to the name "Salvation Army", because of its religious connotations, but I'm supportive of the idea.

Now would be a good time for those of us who use Gentoo to pony up at least $20 each and help Daniel retire his debt as well as maybe help other Gentoo developers to be on a more solid financial footing. It doesn't take a lot of sacrifice, if we all contribute whatever we can reasonably afford. Don't forget that Daniel has contributed far in excess of what he reasonably could afford.

Best wishes to Daniel. I think it's important that he do what is best for his family, but it would sure be nice for us to help him out right now and thank him for all he has done. Nothing says "Thank you!", like a donation. :)

i may not have the monetary means to help
but i can help with support..
i have VERY limited coding experience, but i do have alot of time using linux under my belt
i think if everyone who can not support monetarily would just donate a few minutes of time every day, Daniel Robbins would be pleased..
