Anyway to bypass a hanging mirror during an emerge?

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Anyway to bypass a hanging mirror during an emerge?

  • Quote

Post by Nitsuj » Fri Apr 23, 2004 7:33 am

I'm in the process of installing drivers for my video card, but it's taken well over 2 hours to download the files, which only 20mb, because the first mirror on the list is down (gentoo.eliteitminds.com) it attempts to connect to the server and takes 15 minutes to time out, on top of that it retries 5 times before going to another mirror. Is there anyway I can bypass the first mirror and go to the next mirror on the list?

note: This isn't from an actual Gentoo installation, rather in the prcoess of installing Gentoo from the LiveCD.

Edit /etc/make.conf

Make it so one of the other mirrors in the list is the first one.

Ctrl+Alt+F? (replace the ? with 2,3,4...)

Use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch back to your first login, and Ctrl+Alt+F? (the number you used) to go back to the other login.

I would also recommend to use often the

Code: Select all

# mirrorselect
command to update the list of mirrors and have it automatically select the most appropiate for the user.

press control+c, this will abort the download process, update /etc/make.conf and run emerge again with same parameters; it'll resume all your downloads.

Why

Code: Select all

ctrl + c
when you can

Code: Select all

ctrl + z
Make the change then

Code: Select all

fg
and carry on :)
This way you don't suffer any compile loss & recompile
Or change console like tln said

Are you sure you don't need to send the SIGHUP signal to reload the configuration files?

Doing cntrl-c works in most cases but not in bootstrap. If you hit cntrl-c during bootstrap then restart it, it will fail.

At least it did with me.

sure, but how often are you bootstrapping? btw, `bootsrtap.sh --fetchonly` is your friend ;-) I was talking about interrupt in the middle of download.

Well it depends on how many times it takes you to be able to figure out the difficult installation method for this OS. I would screw something up and start over. But that's how I learned as well...
