gentoo handbook offline...

Call me stupid, but I've not been able to find a link to a tar file where the whole handbook can be downloaded... this has to be somewhere.

Could you point me in the right direction please

This is also on the LiveCDs, which you can view during an install by using links like such:

links /mnt/cdrom/docs/handbook/html/index.html

Once you 'chroot' your install however, you lose access to running 'links' from the CD.
I have been exiting the chroot environment, checking the docs, then going back to chroot, and didn't notice any problems. Not sure if this is recommended or not.

you can open a second terminal (alt-f2), login there and use links. Just install in tty1. After chroot'ing (is this a word??) the links program keeps running in tty2

Login how ? I don't remember the LiveCD stating what the root password was set to, and creating another user login can be a hassle

If there is an easy way to get links running on TTY2, then that would save a lot of to-ing and fro-ing.

just type passwd in terminal 1 to set your root password to a known value

I don't advise printing the Gentoo Handbook, it's too big and will change often anyway

I know, the fact that it changes often is one of the best things about the handbook.
But see my situation. I will move to another place in 3 days, and intalling gentoo on a server, and 3 laptops. I have a printer at home where I found a new cadridge and I don't need this printer anymore, cause in my new place I got a better one waiting for me

Let's max this old one out, hehe.

But anyway, I think using the documentation in html-format is still one of the simplest and best usable things available, so I think I just use this one.
I have to collect 100.000 pages of paper anyway

quit bumping and read the second post of the thread
