Ping wont work

  • Quote

Post by Zacay » Mon Apr 19, 2004 3:46 pm

Something is wrong in my linux system,
I can't ping www.google.com but I can surf to it.
I can't ping forums.gentoo.org but yet I am here.
I can't ping other computer in my network...
I can only ping my self.

This when I use linux, but when I boot to my windows (same computer)
I can do all of the above.

Another thing is I can't use VNC to remotly control my other computers in the network. But when I am in windows it works..

I jhave a router, and I have dissabled the firewall features..
But I don't think its the router, cause windows works.

Why doesn't it work with my linux?

Any ideas?
what information do you need from me? (about my settings, kernel)?

You don't by chance have ipchains or iptables set up do you?

That's my guess as well.

Run these commands for us, will ya?

Code: Select all

iptables -L -v
ipchains -L -v
I haven't used ipchains in ages, so I don't know if that's a valid command... any 2.2.x guys want to verify? :?:

Hi,

did you try to explicitly specify the network interface when pinging? Like

Code: Select all

ping -I eth0 www.gentoo.org
?
And by the way, have you tried to increase the ttl value for your ICMP-packets?
You can achive this by using ping's -t option together with a number (64 or more, I'd suggest).

I first had to merge them :D
# iptables -L -v
FATAL: Module ip_tables not found.
iptables v1.2.9: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

# ipchains -L -v
ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel
EDIT: Running 2.6.5 gentoo-dev-sources

Try shutting down iptables first

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/iptables stop
. You can also check your logs, dmesg and /var/log/messages etc.

Can it be something I missed in the kernel?
I am taking wild guesses now .. :(

i don't think so, you do have other things that access the net correct? Have you tried traceroute - I wonder if that works...?

try -

Code: Select all

emerge traceroute
then

Code: Select all

traceroute google.com
maybe emerge and try fping as well.
Cheers,
Ryan

izabelle zacay # traceroute google.com
traceroute: Warning: google.com has multiple addresses; using 216.239.57.99
traceroute to 216.239.57.99 (216.239.57.99), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
1 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 1.575 ms 2.017 ms 1.475 ms

And it continues to 30....
So I guess neither traceroute is working..

Could be a router or ISP that blocks ICMP packets, nah?

That's normal, traceroute is working fine :)
My guess (as barlad and Valhlalla suggest) is that either your router or ISP is blocking this. Can you connect your machine to another one and test pinging that?

Just pull the router out of the picture.
Plug your linux box directly into your cable modem. do a ping www.google.com and it should return replies.

If it does then you have a config problem on your router.
(Is the ip in windows the same as Linux?)

If it doenst then you have a problem with your linux box. You didnt emerge any firewall for it did you?

ISP shouldnt be blocking ICMP's. Some sites may have block WAN requests enabled so if you ping them they won't reply. Also he said it works in windows and he doesn't receive replies when he pings his gateway.

traceroute should be able to get outside of your gateway/NAT device. That may be part of the issue, if not all of the issue, go with c0r3 and remove your router for testing.

Can you ping your own IP.

Code: Select all

ping 127.0.0.1
?

I did and I gate same result.. Nothing.. :(
Yes its the same ip for my windows, I have dual boot system so even the same computer.

No I never use firewalls.. I find them annoying, I use them only with windows cause there I really need it to survive :P

And pinging my self works, no problemo...

And I know that my ISP isn't blocking this, cause I use ping with windows and no problem.. I can ping my real IP and loopback device..
Can ISP block linux pings and not windows pings ? (noob question warning) :P

So.. this really is a wierd problem then ... :(
