MPEG4 files as "octet-stream" in gnome 2.6

Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

MPEG4 files as "octet-stream" in gnome 2.6

Post by acoromi » Mon Apr 12, 2004 4:11 pm

Hi everyone!

I'm just updated to Gnome2.6, and my question is:

All my *.m4a files (encoded with iTunes on Windows) are now as "applicatio/octet-stream" mime type and Rhythmbox is not able to play it. Why??????

I has no problem with Gnome 2.4!!

Somebody knows what can i do to play this files in Rhythmbox??

Thanks

Gnome 2.6 uses the new shared-mime-info from freedesktop.org for MIME type detection. Its also making shit with some of my AVI files, which are detected as RIFF files.
Make a bug report. Although i have no .m4a files, i guess it's reproducable.
You know, there are some reasons why gnome 2.6 is masked.

I have the exact same problem. I have tried mucking around creating mime-types for .m4a, but nothing happends except that Nautilus just keep on krashing. I guess we just have to wait for a new version of Gnome... :(

Hi,

I have the same pb... with my .mp4 extension. :cry:
I also try to create dummy extension (.test, .dummy) and associate gedit.
but the file is still not reconized by nautilus.
However the ~/.gnome/mime-info/user.keys seems to have the good mime description.

Any :idea: to create working user define mime type is welcome.

Thanks,
Damien

Is it just me, or haven't this problem been partially solved? Nautilus still identifies .mp4 as application/octet-stream, but Rhythmbox can actually add them to the library and play them flawlessly on my system!

No, it's not just you...

But it seems, we all used to live with that problem... :(

OK, the solution is really simple in gnome 2.8 (I assume 2.6 as well):

open file /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml

add the following entry to the file:

<mime-type type="audio/x-m4a">
<comment>m4a audio file</comment>
<comment xml:lang="no">ukjent</comment>
<magic priority="50">
<match offset="4" type="string" value="ftypM4A" />
</magic>
<glob pattern="*.m4a" />
</mime-type>

and then run the command:
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime

and you will see the type audio/x-m4a type appear in the Nautilus browser

same here :) Thank you so much dutchfrank. This one has been bothering me for a while now....don't know how I missed this post up until now. I thought it was a problem with Rhythmbox and not Gnome, so I guess I was looking for the wrong solution, hehe.

i had a similar problem, mime types weren't recognized as well. the reason is i had no update-mime-database although the package 'shared-mime-info' was installed.

actually. it was corrupted. it contained no files and _no other package_ complained eventhough 'updating mime database' failed on _every_ emerge.
emerge shared-mime-info solved the problem.
