airport or airport extreme?

  • Quote

Post by aallmighty » Tue Mar 30, 2004 8:23 am

I will soon be receiving a powerbook g4 12" 867 mhz i think it is. From what I've seen it seems that the airport card is supported, but not the airport extreme. How do I know which card is in, if any? The laptop is about a year old. Also, is it possible to get anything to work with the airport extreme? even 802.11b? Thanks.

it will probably be airport card then.
you cannot get an AE working under linux till now! so if it's an AE find yourself a pcmcia card ( or usb if no slots)...

airport is supported by the kernel

Airport extreme is supported on ibook G4 only by mac osx, only linux can't use it.
Are you sure you can use a normal airport card on a G4 machine? I've read in other threads that G4 machines can use only the airport extreme cards...
If I'm wrong let me know, I would like to use a normal airport card on my G4 ibook!

micron, it depends on how old the your ibook is...

the slot holding the AE is different with the one holding the A cards and depending what slot you have you can use the AE or the A...

Perfect, this is what I think!
 on a G4 ibook the only choice is the airport extreme card
 on old G3 ibook you can use only the "normal" airport card

 aallmighty you can use only the airport extreme card

partially correct,

there are G4 ibooks that were shipped with airport and not airport extreme...
a year ago they didn't ship them with AE...

the point is if you have AE you can't put a A card in it, and vica versa

With the amount of posts referencing Airport Extreme lately you would think Broadcom would get a clue and release a driver!

/me sends another e-mail to broadcom
Is that a huge bandwidth or are you just happy to see me?

I bought the 12" Powebook G4 as soon as it came out, and it was only available with the airport extreme. Sorry, but you will have to buy a wireless USB adapter like I did. I have the D-LINK DWL-122 USB adapter which is easily supported under Linux. Here is the HOWTO that I followed to get it working:

http://julian.coccia.com/article-53.html

Best of luck!

Forgot to mention that I have the 867 MHz rather than the updated model.
