Run fdisk and find out? If you boot knoppix (or Windows if you must ;) ) and run the fdisk program then choose 4 to view partition info it should give you everything partitionwise about the disk... You'll still need to know what the filesystem is though (ext2, ext3, reiser, etc)
Hope that helps

You can mount the partition and then run

Code: Select all

# df
You can also trying different partitions when you mount them, let's say:

Code: Select all

# mount -t ext3 /dev/hda1 /mnt/temp
In the place of ext3 you can also try: ext2, reiserfs, xfs, ...

The gentoo install guide has that part well detailed, you could print it and check it while installing it, or if you have network while installing you can just browse the guide.

Have you tried useing /dev/hdb, /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd instead? If you are using SCSI emulation (or your drives are SCSI), then you should use /dev/sr0, /dev/sr1.

Instead of /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 and /dev/cdrom/cdrom1 i tried using /dev/hdd and /dev/hdc and the system answers me the same: wrong fs type.
