I'm a brand noobie; this is probably one of those "ought to already know" questions, but here goes.

I'm attempting to install the new 2004.2 release onto my laptop. Following the handbook online, I've gotten to the point "6.a Chrooting, Code Listing 3". After entering "env-update" I get the following error:

!!! Invalid token (not "=") !DOCTYPE
!!! ParseError: Invalid token (not '='): /etc/make.conf: line 8
!!! Incorrect multiline literals can cause this. Do not use them.

Lines 8 and 9 of my /etc/make.conf are:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"

Did I do something wrong, or are others experiencing this?

What do I do to correct this and continue with the install?

Thanks.

I have no idea what a doctype declaration is doing in make.conf. Try removing those lines.

Thanks. It looks like HTML code was inserted during the mirrorselect process? I deleted everything from what was line 8, leaving the last line (GENTOO_MIRRORS="...). Seems OK now, unless I deleted something I shouldn't have which will bite me later.

Thanks again.

I had the same problem during my install. After I deleted those lines from my make.conf everything went fine, not sure if this is a bug in mirrorselect, env-update or just human error.

Some way or another mirrorselect once put a whole site's source code into my make.conf.

Had exactly the same problem with 2004.1

had to comment a line that mirrorselect put into make.conf just before the mirrors.

Just remove the lines or comment them out....

Try the mirrorselect command without the '>> /etc/make.conf' to see output on the screen and if it looks ok. It should not contain any html, just a line starting with 'GENTOO_MIRRORS='.
If you have already got the errors in make.conf you need to remove them of course. Look for lines which do not start with a comment (#) and lines not starting with 'SOMEVAR='.

it is not even necessary to run mirrorselect to continute the install... if you do not it will just randomly pick one always... I never use mirrorselect...
