Okay, I have Alsa working great with the gentoo 2.6.3 kernel. I also set up alsactl to save and restore volume levels. However, when I reboot and then load up Gnome, I get no sound. I immediately check my alsa volume levels by loading up alsamixergui and the levels are perfect. However, when I check the volume levels in the Gnome Volume Control it shows different volume levels (most notably my PCM level is set all the way to the bottom). Shouldn't the levels in both Alsamixergui and the Gnome Volume Control match? If not, is there any way to save the volume levels in Gnome?? |

IMHO gnome uses esd by default and not alsa. Check system/gstreamer/default/audiosink. I bet it is set to osssink or esdsink, you should try alsasink. |

I set it to alsasink as you suggested and I am still unable to save the volume settings. If I reboot, my PCM volume is still set all the way down (even if I tell Gnome to save my session settings on log out). In fact, I didn't even notice any difference once I started using alsasink. |

I am using kernel 2.6.4-ck1 with ALSA compiled as modules. I am also using udev and _no_ devfs. I have emerged alsa-utils-1.0.3. I have alsasound set to run at boot, but when I boot up (this is an Inspiron 4150 laptop) I get this error:
Code: | Restoring Mixer Levels
/usr/bin/alsactl: set_controls:986: snd_ctl_open error: No such file or directory |
I log into GNOME, and the volume control applet appears ok, but no sound from xmms. All the ALSA modules are loaded ok, and checking with amix, the Master levels are ok, but the PCM levels are [0%] [off]. I set the PCM levels like this: Code: | amixer set PCM 100 unmute | and I get sound. Next reboot, and the PCM levels are back to 0. |
