I'm following the directions in the VLC wiki entry: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Vlc
I've added the qt4 flag(in addition to the wiki recommended flags)
I keep getting this error when I emerge vlc:

in the guide, this is all one line :
Code: | echo "media-video/vlc X a52 alsa dts dvd ffmpeg mp3 mpeg win32codecs ncurses opengl sdl skins truetype wxwindows xv" >> /etc/portage/package.use"
|
so /etc/portage/package.use should have
Code: | media-video/vlc X a52 alsa dts dvd ffmpeg mp3 mpeg win32codecs ncurses opengl sdl skins truetype wxwindows xv |
on one line.
fix, and see if that helps.
The "+++" is also a mistake, so make sure you clean up all of it. |

Hello,
I did the same as you, it compiled but always crashed at launch, saying
something was wrong with qt4 (on my 2 gentoo boxes running amd64, one with gnome, the other with xfce)...
My configuration is very similar to yours, my system is also up to date.
I've just found out how to resolve the problem !
0) I do not use ~amd64 version anymore so I went back to vlc 2.0.3 version. I'll try an update later...
1) I used the recommended use flags + some more for my comfort...
2) I re-emerge qt-lib with gtkstyle flag (don't know if this has something to do with it, but I don't want to spend one more hour to rebuil it)
3) I uninstalled then emerged vlc
Now it works fine, furthermore vlc is now much more beautiful...
Here are my use flags :
#required by media-video/vlc-2.0.3, required by vlc (argument) :
>=sys-libs/zlib-1.2.7 minizip
# Try to adapt qt for gnome :
x11-libs/qt-gui gtkstyle
# Recommended flags :
media-video/vlc qt4 X a52 alsa dts dvd ffmpeg mp3 mpeg win32codecs ncurses opengl sdl skins truetype xv -pulseaudio

2) I re-emerge qt-lib with gtkstyle flag (don't know if this has something to do with it, but I don't want to spend one more hour to rebuil it)

Well, this stuf broke down qjackctl, audacity, hydrogen, etc...
(all these apps have Qt GUI but are installed on a gnome desktop)
So : I had to re-emerge qt-lib without gtkstyle flag... But some are still dead
In fine you may be just need to rebuild qt-lib :

here's what i got:
* IMPORTANT: 5 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
* Use eselect news to read news items.
Calculating dependencies... done!
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "qt-lib".
emerge: searching for similar names...
emerge: Maybe you meant any of these: sci-libs/ta-lib, x11-libs/tslib, dev-tcltk/tklib? |

Solved by installing libICE and libSM and then reinstalling vlc |

Seems not working for me. I've got the same error in vlc emerging:

But it's little different than blackdeath's. In environment, line 3359 is environment, line 3355. |

This "illegal instruction" was bugging me also. To fix it, I didn't do anything special, just reinstalled all qt and xfce related stuff (emerge -e qt-meta xfce4-meta --exclude 'glibc gcc') and then reinstalled vlc itself. After that things started to work. The funniest thing was, that the problem happened only under XFCE. Under sawfish, or i3 everything was working fine. Real mystery. It must be something that xfce offers and vlc tries to use. |
