This thread continues from: Unofficial minimal 2008.0 for x86/amd64 w/reiser4+truecrypt

Hi all, I've created unofficial minimal CDs. They're based upon the latest profile available and feature some updated components like filesystem tools and utilities.
The main reason for doing this was to be able to migrate my root partition to reiser4 filesystem while having the ease of a bootable CD from where to resolve problems (just in case!).
I won't make full liveCDs (too much time and hassle) but if anybody's interested I'll keep supporting these two, at least to provide reiser4-compatible minimal CDs. As reiser4 is not included in mainline and it's still considered unstable and testing, I won't answer of any data loss caused by these minimalCDs. Everything's hosted on a 100Mbit server from OVH (running gentoo, of course!) and both HTTP and FTP download are available.

Please refer to the link above for latest information about the release and my overlay.
Hope to be useful to somebody out there! I'll wait for feedbacks, comments and critics.

Cheers

@Neo2 I'm using metro on regular basis for building stage3 and there is no libxml2 issues. Can you post the details of problem, also forums.funtoo.org is working, you can contact drobbins.

Uhm.. maybe it was only due to the fact that it was the first snapshot of my stages from a different kind of stages (I have only certain packages unmasked).
I will try building a newer snapshot today for both arches and let you know whether the problem persists or not.
Thanks.

Cheers,
Neo2

@angry_vincent: I found the culprit.
I was using metro-1.5.1, which is the latest version available in portage. Sadly, this doesn't include some fixes that were committed right after the release of 1.5.1, which state:
Quote:
commit 6d996809537c04b78d5e7d28b1114ee3c47a3b75
Author: Daniel Robbins <drobbins@funtoo.org>

python2/3 fix - set python2 as default in stage3 build if available

python stagebuild parts modified to work with python2 or python3

commit 3de414e3b14fabd93f5cf2becdf6bda96cdbb0d4

explicitly use python2 rather than python

commit 0e7fdc0c430b8848e27ffef18d0be244609f2a26
Author: Daniel Robbins <drobbins@funtoo.org>

USE fix for stage2 python rebuild

commit 64c9c02f91683decf647badc03a027cf7b8bf156
Author: Daniel Robbins <drobbins@funtoo.org>
Date: Thu Apr 1 15:50:15 2010 -0600

add full python build to end of stage2, avoids issues during stage3 build

and are the very reason for libxml2 not building with 1.5.1 (something was screwed between python and xml).
I am now happily using the code cloned from the git repository, which works perfectly. These minor fixes alone might be worth a minor bugfix release (1.5.2). Too bad portage lacks a live ebuild.
I will be updating the server soon.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction =)

Cheers,
Neo2

So... it was quite a while since I last posted here.
Some of you may be thinking that the project is lost. Well, it is not.
I've been working continuosly at it since my last post/site update, but I hit many bugs and had little time to deal with them.
Along with that was the will to migrate the site to PostgreSql + Lighttpd + Drupal instead of MySql + Apache + Joomla, and that was a mess too. Figuring out how the new CMS works, doing tests, finding similar solutions in order not to lose functionality (analytics, paypal, etc..), messing with the database... It was a long road. But it is done. And I love the way it is now. This new combination gives me a whole load of extra performance while killing memory and CPU usage. Not to mention the fact that the standard compliancy and extensive debugging of the new three products give me a lot less to worry about when performing updates. While increasing the overall security. I'm simply delighted.
All of that was done while doing major server upgrades, the most notable (from my POV) was the ability to patch the kernel with both grsecurity and ck2 patches (with two little hand-made fixes), which boosted the responsivity of the server itself.
I have some spare time and I intend to have a release ready before next Sunday. I would love to wait until 2.6.38, but that would mean an extra delay of 2-3 weeks for reiser4 patches to catch up.

All I can say now is: stay tuned!

Cheers,
Neo2

Neo2,

You could update the name for your new release. 2008.0 was three years ago

Thanks for remembering me, NeddySeagoon :)
I do well remember the discussion we had by private messages and there's no doubt I'll change the name
