|

Hi,
I want to watch movies from netflix online on my linux computer but I don't get it working.
I tried so far installing moonlight and installing firefox and silverlight in wine. Two approaches but no success.
Using firefox (in linux) always says that I have the "wrong" platform for movie streaming.
With wine firefox still asks me to download and install silverlight even if I did this already.
I wondered if someone got this working already and can guide me. |

I don't know about the wine approach. Moonlight currently only supports Silverlight 1 streams. Netflix streaming requires Silverlight 2. So, unless/until there is an upgrade to Moonlight, netflix streaming won't happen on linux. |

This is true as Netflix streaming requires Silverlight 2. However I heard that there is going to be a of Silverlight variant for Linux. |

I've researched this more...even for the newer versions of Moonlight that support Silverlight 2 streams, Netflix has implemented DRM that doesn't work with Moonlight...and Netflix has, thus far, announced no plans to support linux. For now, at least, it looks hopeless. |

Apparently the "Moonlight 3.0 Preview" was announced recently. I don't see any mention of the DRM as part of the release though, sadly, but perhaps it will be coming soon. The only reference I could find on the site to Netflix says the DRM isn't supported, but I couldn't tell for sure which version of Moonlight that information applied to.

Silverlight 2 supports Microsoft PlayReady Digital Rights Management (DRM). This is the DRM solution being used by Netflix's “Watch Instantly” service for streaming movies to PC (Windows-only) and Mac computers.
Status: unsupported |
