I hope this falls under multimedia.

I am running KDE 4.2 with Firefox 3.5 (mozilla-firefox-bin). I am trying to get java support for it. So far I have reinstalled with the "java" use flag, I have emerged sun-java-jre and also sun-java-jdk. I have created a symbolic link of the plugin to /opt/firefox/plugins and I have also tried the eselect method from the wiki. I am at a loss. everything seems to check out. java-config seems to report the right thing, but firefox will not support java!

any helpful tips?

thanks

That should not be necessary, everything should be fine with emerging sun-jdk and using eselect java-nsplugin. If your system is 64bit you need to set the 32bit java-nsplugin since firefox-bin is 32bit (if I'm not mistaken).

Can you give us the output of eselect java-nsplugin list, please?

If you emerge "www-client/mozilla-firefox" you get a firefox that matches your system (64bit firefox on 64bit systems, 32bit firefox on 32bit systems) as the sources are compiled accordingly. Mozilla-firefox-bin is only available 32bit.

you were right! I recompiled to 64bit and now it all works. Its amazingly fast as well. unfortunately, it is back to version 3.0. I need to find a version 3.5 somewhere...

3.5 is already in the official portage tree, but it's hard masked (see http://packages.gentoo.org/package/www-client/mozilla-firefox or use "equery list -p mozilla-firefox"). If you want to unmask 3.5 please refer to the portage guide here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=3&chap=3#doc_chap3.
