Brightness not reset after quiting Unreal Tournament GOTY

I'm not sure this is really a Gamers & Players topic, but because the issue is only with Unreal Tournament GOTY, I guess it is.

The problem is this: the game adjusts the brightness and/or gamma of the screen, like a lot of games do, but it doesn't set it back when the game exists. This is the case for the native version, as well as running the Windows version with Wine. I have to do "nvidia-settings --load-config-only" to set the brightness back.

The brightness the screen is set to, is not dependent on the brightness option in the game. So, setting the brightness in-game to what would be neutral, won't help. If it's gamma related, I can't find an option in UT to set the gamma.

Is there a clean way to fix this? I know I could make a wrapper script, but I'd rather address the problem at the source.

Would there perhaps be a possibility of locking the brightness and gamma controls of the video card?

Specs:
Nvidia GeForce 6600 LE
Nvidia-driver: 1.0.8776
Xorg 7.1
Kernel: 2.6.18-gentoo-r6

look up xorg server comands, theres usualy and xset<type> to enter and if you don't give it paramaters it will go back to default.

eg, for mouse acceleration its xsetm 0 0

then xsetm to get it back to normal

xset p

maybe?

Running "xset something" or nvidia-settings -l" is not really different... But, it seems I'm going to have to write a wrapper script anyway, because I need to run it with "taskset 1 wine unrealtournament", because the switching over from core to core by the kernel causes errors in the timeline calculation, making the game jerky. With Unreal Tournament 2003, this represents itself with a crash saying "negative delta time".

And, UT doesn't take kindly to cpufreq scaling... Bothersome game, this is...

Try nvidia-drivers-1.0.9746. I don't have a problem with the brightness not resetting when games-fps/unreal-tournament-451 exits, with both opengl & sdl.

Those drivers are still unstable. I did try them once, but it resulted in a modeline mess. I couldn't get the proper video timings out of them. Especially for apps which switch to resolutions like 640x480, such as Dosbox. I hope it's nothing that's supposed to be a feature...

BTW, a hint: Unreal Tournament in Wine works better than the native one. Also, isn't 436 the version clients should use? I read about 451 giving problems:
Wikipedia wrote:Third, because of the prevalent cheating in the game, the game engine has been modified multiple times to versions 436 and 451. This latest release came about by the joint efforts of the game's "modding" scene, united as UTPG.org, wanting to keep UT up-to-date after Epic Games stopped supporting the title. Clients can but do not have to apply this patch, as they can still connect to 451 servers while running version 436. It is often recommended that clients DO NOT install the 451 patch, as it has brought about several problems.

Unreal Tournament in WINE hangs up after some time(stops reading input). The brigthness can be reset by "xgamma - gamma 1.0". And last but not least, UT on Linux can work just as the one on Windows by applying the following unofficial patch http://eros.vlo.gda.pl/~rush/ut-436p-pre1.tar.bz2 - it includes the unofficial binary released by Ryan somewhere ... and un updated OpenGL renderer + some mixed 436+451 libraries. If you don't trust this patch, then don't download it. I cannot guarantee that it's 100% clean, I can only say that my UT works great, just as on Windows.
