I recently did a fresh gentoo install after having the same gentoo install for about 2 years, i installed kde and jdk and all of that stuff and everything worked fine, then i emerged gdm......... ever since i emerged gdm kde dosen't know what to do with .jpg files, it used to give me a thumbnail and now it dosen't, and in addition to that, control center does not see them as valid files when i want to switch a background.

now, there is an easy fix for all of this.......... just delete the .jpg extension and everything works fine, however i don't really want to do this on the thousand or so .jpg files i have.

has anybody had this happen, and if so...... How do i fix it?

Whether a file's icon gives a thumbnail in konqueror versus a generic icon would be controlled by maximum file sizes in Previews & Meta-Data, no? (See also in Control Panel/KDE Components/File Manager). Not sure how gnome has acted to change this functionality, though. Also, what shows up in File Associations in Control Center/KDE Components/image/jpeg,jpg? Has gnome hijacked those associations?

well rsa, that is not the problem, i checked just to make sure but nothing looks out of the ordinary.

to be more clear, it is only .jpg or .jpeg files. Png, gif, and others all work fine and if i delete the file extension from a .jpg or .jpeg file it also works fine.

I don't really think this is a result of gnome hijacking any kde settings, i think it is some sort of dependency for gnome that happened to break this feature in kde, but i could be totally worng. I just want to fix it lol.

Is problem only with qt-based apps, not gtk (gimp, e.g.?)?

as far as i know it is only qt apps, i only installed gdm, i don't use gnome and i don't have the gimp installed yet, i typically do all of my graphic and video work on my mac but i have used gentoo for years on my main system and i have never experienced this

What about logging out, killing X, backing up all of your current ~/.kde to somewhere safe (or just rename it, move it to a folder, etc.), thus having no pre-existing .kde. Restart X/gdm, choose kde, have Kpersonalizer select some generic settings just to get rolling, and then seeing if jpegs are visible? You can always restore your existing ~/.kde afterwards, but this would at least tell you if kde is really broken (in which case selective re-emerging could fix), or is instead a problem with a local config.
